Hi guys,

I'll be making a Kill Team / Skirmish board. I want it to be covered with vegetation (no rocky wastelands for me) - grass, moss, fallen leaves, something like that.

My main inspirations are dark forests (Mirkwood style) and Tarkovski's Stalker; also - yellowish, brownish and greenish earth colours.

My current idea is:
1. a layer of sand, baking soda, mud-imitating modelling paste, and soil, painted by stippling.
2. a layer of static grass, small twigs, two-three tones of flock (rigid or spongy), maybe dry tea and coffee.
3. tufts (?)
4. selective washes and drybrushes here and there.

But I'm looking for other ideas, especially if they are well tested. Do you have any recipes or tutorials for terrain bases or boards like that?

The best resource I know of is Luke Towan's website and youtube channel. He produces some absolutely stunning dioramas.
It doesn't really fit the dark forest theme though, but there are plenty of invaluable tips to gain from his work, which apply to pretty much any type of terrain/board.
