I've decided to jump back in, specifically with Death Guard. Is the Dark Imperium half and a rhino a good start?

yeah it's a solid start, IMHO a rhino is proably unnesscary (the death guard are all about a slow infantry advance up the board and have the tools/abilities to survive this) I think if I was going to make a suggestion, I'd suggest looking into a Plague Burst Crawler instead of a Rhino

While I haven't actually played in 8th yet, I have been reading up on strategy. Seems that, unless they are truly an effective tank as well as a troop carrier, spending extra money on infantry is usually just more worthwhile. The Plagueburst Crawler is an exception as its power are more than worth the in-game points you pay for it. If you are looking more around the $40 range instead, maybe pick up Typhus as he buffs your Poxwalkers.

A Mypthitic Blight hauler is even cheaper than the Rhino and provides more firepower and protection. And supports the DG tactic of marching forward firing guns. So I'd suggest that.
If you can get a cheap 2nd hand rhino that's never wrong, though. Just don't pay more than 20€ on a rhino, they're everywhere already.

If you start with Dark Imperium you have one of our best units in the foetid bloat drone. (with dual plaguespitters)
Id recommend using the Lord of Contagion as Typhus if your opponent lets you, he then buffs the poxwalkers and is a psycher too.
Transports went up this edition so I would also not recommend a Rhino. Get either more plague marines or poxwalkers.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples |

Picked up 2x Myphitic Blighthaulers. What do you recommend load out wise for Plague Marines? And thoughts on Helbrites?

Plague marines are ok, like all power armour units they're not durable enough for their points, even with disgustingly resilient. Load out wise the best weapons are blight launchers for ranged or flails for close combat.
Hellbrutes do a job, can go ranged with twin linked lascannon and rocket launcher, or close range with melta and power fist. Sadly they don't get disgustingly resilient, they do however get our legion trait of being able to move and fire heavy weapons without penalty which is nice. Everybody raves about forgeworld dreadnoughts but these aren't cheap in money.

I run 3 squads of 7 PM with double plasma, in rhinos, with a plaguecaster to support.
Footslogging marines seems, er, bad. They're only 24" range and they aren't all that survivable for their points cost.
