Hey guys,

I am looking to add a squad or two of veteran to my ranks. My plan is to go with a chimera and add the wheel conversion. Then do the classic drive by with them. But I have a few questions about it all, some of them are lore orientated too!

How unlikely would it be for a Cadian regiment to have a different planets Imperial guard within its regiment? For example, I love the aesthetic and style of Tallarn raiders, so was tempted to throw https://maxmini.eu/by-faction/guardsman/desert-dwellers-heads-bits onto my Veterans, use cadian bodies, maybe grab some 3rd party cloaks, or make my own with greenstuff! I would also most likely paint them in tallarn colours. Would this be too unusual? Or could it be that they are a small elite force that a cut off Cadian regiment found and decided to take onboard?(Not the actual reasoning, I just attempted to legitimise)

OR would you suggest just creating another small force and building it as Tallarn.

I was also curious for any tips or advice on modelling veterans in general, anything to make them more unique. Any examples you guys have gotten. The classic Cadian/Catachan is obviously a go to, but I have done that before so looking to go a bit further with it.

I am aware of Anvil minis also! But If possible, any conversions using GW products predominantly is preferred. Heads/Cloaks and things of that nature 3rd party stuff is fine though.

In terms of the fluff- that is absolutely a possibility!

When regiments suffer severe casualties that reduce their combat effectiveness below that required of a single regiment, they are frequently merged with another regiment to create an up-to-strength unit.

Typically, the Departmento Munitorum tries to merge regiments from the same world to avoid culture clashes, but this is not always possible. Therefore, it is absolutely possible for two regiments form different worlds to be merged.

When that occurs, the new regiment is usually given the name of the world they were merged on- say the Cadian 45th and the Tallarn 93rd were merged on the world of Praxos- they would become the Praxian 37th or something. Regiments form the same world generally get the numbers fused, like the Cadian 45th/72nd for example.

How the cultures of the two regiments merge is up to you to model!

(All numbers pulled from nowhere).

In terms of modelling- I generally think giving them non-standard equipment and pouches and what not is enough. Basically, give them pouches not from the standard Guard kit if you have any lying around, that kind of thing.

That leaves plenty of room for some merge then!

When you talk about modelling and add pouches. Do you mean not to use Cadian bodies as a base? The place Which sells the heads does a full 10 man squad. But that would nullify use at anything GW specific, not that I have plans to do anything, but its nice to have the option I suppose. Maybe I need to think of a better way to make Tallarn bodies using GW kits.

Oh, no, I just mean ammo pouches and water canteens and stuff stuck on the outside. You mentioned you used Catachans in the past, so I reckoned you probably had bitz floating around.

Backpacks are another good option.

I have two type of Veterans that are based around the Cadian models but may give you some ideas.

The first uses the forge world respirators. and was done by profeesionals

Spoiler:

The second, was done by me, using heads from the Scion box and the FW backpacks.

I run Cadians (other stuff too, but enough Cadians to meet GW event requirements if need be). My Vets are a squad of Vostroyans, a squad of "Elysians" (Elysian heads, Tau torso and legs, Cadian boots and arms), and a squad mixed from most all of the other regiments.

I also recently bought some old school Catachan that I'm painting/finishing. I can always use some of those as extra vets if needed.

I do a lot of conversions on my infantry, feel free to have a browse of my thread (link in sig)
but in terms of vets, the easiest and most effective in my opinion is the beret heads from the scions, and a whole bunch of pouches and gear, backpacks etc.

Fortress world of Ostrakan

When I was making my veterans (back in 6/7th ed), I went for carapace armor as I used them as Grenadiers. I modeled the Ceramite plates of green stuff. Then I got some Stahlhelm heads as I model my Guard after WW2 germans and done. Also, I made them cable-fed lasguns.

You can see it in my gallery, but it's usually crappy work, as I wasn't very experienced back then.

Speaking of mixing, I think if regiments are mixed, their equipment gets standardized as well and it would be quite rare to see half of the squad wearing turbans while the other have helmets. It would be 2 turbans/8helmets or vice versa, depends where they are fighting.
To explain this, a merged unit fighting on the desert world would likely adopt the Tallarn habits and customs and the Cadian habits would likely disappear over time. If you unload a bunch of Tallarns into a woodland area, their turbans would become a purely cultural thing and they'll soon adapt the Cadian way of life, since it's more beneficial to them.
