Hey, would any one have any idea why the dried pva i have put on a 130mm base is turning white and wet again after a couple of minutes of me having put paint over it?, it starts causing tears in the paint and ruins every thing. Do you think it could be because the large "rock" i have put on the base still has wet glue under it that hasn't dried and that's causing this or some thing? Like maybe the wet middle part i cant see thats under the rock of the base has veins of some sort ( cant think of a better word ) that are still attatched to the dry area i can see, and me adding paint triggers the veins to pump the wet glue back to the dry area or some gak.

Thanks heaps.

edit - i only found out that the "rock" on the base still had wet glue on it because i had to tear it off after the mess started. But im not confident thats the reason the dryed area around the rest of the base started to go wet after putting paint on it, so maybe some one knows.

Most likely i just have to learn to become more patient and give it more time to make sure what i cant see under rock is completely dry if thats the reason this is happening.

IIRC some pva glues are washable, these soften under water so they can be washed from clothes etc. Have a check and if possible get some builders PVA or non washable.

It takes FOREVER for regular PVA to "dry" and it's NEVER waterproof (you can always remove it from models by soaking in warm to hot water).

The water content of the paint is enough to do that, too.

I wonder how these other people i watch manage to have no issues when doing it. Oh well ill give it one more try and wait longer this time and if it doesn't work im never using pva glue like this again lol.

Thanks so much.

Worth mentioning, anything big enough to be a "rock" on a base probably won't be held long term by PVA anyway.

I'd suggest either pick up a cheap hot glue gun for this kind of basing or use a 2 part epoxy type adhesive so you're not losing rocks whenever your figure case takes a knock.

I use construction adhesive to glue actual rock ballast to bases.

It comes in a waterproof (external grade) as well as water-clean-up internal grade.

I also use it to stick foam hills to mdf basing (stops the edges of the foam chipping as often or as easily.)

I mix the PVA (white) glue with the paint whenever I base, so it acts as a paint and adhesive, all in one. Using PVA glue straight on will always have it dry in a possibly undesired effect, especially if painting over it, as it will reconstitute it and alter the color placed on top of it.
