Here is a still I grabbed from a video where they've used a pose very similar to mine.



You can see how the pauldron (or lack thereof) exposes the pad underneath on the shoulder, since you can't put a big curved surface onto the relatively-flat area you get with this pose.

The pauldrons for the sergeant have some stuff hanging off them, which makes the problem even worse - you can't get it straight on the arm because the extra bits dig into the arm.

Does it matter? Are yours all like this too? Want to make sure I'm not a fethwit.

I can get it decently on there, but then there's a massive gap on the rear side like in this other photo I found. Not sure what's best here - if I want to focus on covering the pad, or on getting the pauldron to fit around the back.

The problem is that you've attached the backpack which is now preventing the installation of the pauldron.
If you've assembled the mini with plastic cement/plastic glue then your only choice is to cut the backpack off with a modelling saw or carefully with a craft knife.
If you've used superglue then you can put the mini in the freezer for a bit which should make the adhesive brittle enough to be 'snapped' off.

In future I advise leaving the backpack off until the mini is fully painted or at the very least assembled.

Yeah.. It looks like the pauldron is too low too. Looks to me like you've got more of the under pauldron bit showing than you should have

I'm just following the instructions given, but the backpacks aren't getting in the way at all, so I don't know what difference it would've made.

Right - this is just a photo from the internet, not my model - I haven't put the pauldron on yet. It looks like the official one has a similar thing going on, but with less under-pauldron shown.

Not sure how they did it.
