Taster

The six items in the core set for $60.

The stretch goals unlocked so far, there are one or two more since this list was last edited.

I cant say any more about the quality than what I can read. It's a first project but hard models have been made by the developers so they are some way into production and its a fairly safe back. There is downloadable freebie which you can try even if you do not back:

Hyperlink not activated on Dakka.

Doing my bit for Dakka community and also to garner new backers in the last week. As of writing there are five days to go and it is well over the funding lines with plenty of stretchgoals to come.

Man, this looks great. I've got a bunch of buildings from other 3d designers, but these seem to be both better quality (buildings in two pieces lock together, etc.) and much better value.
I'm in.
Thanks for the heads up.

The main entry price at $60 is very generous in my opinion, I only just got a 3d printer and so haven't backed any stl developer before, but most offer a lot less for a higher price.

It is very generous compared to other companies, especially with all the unlocked stretch goals.

Another point to add, a number of backers have commented about not having a 3d printer, and backed this project as their breakthrough into 3d printing.

I am one of them.

I had long put off 3d printing as the set up costs are large for a decent printer, however a low cost entry product combined with a reduction of the cost of decent 3d printers meant I made the plunge now, and as I want to 3d print for gaming, what better place to ask what printer to buy than from backers and the project developers. Who were both very willing to answer questions. It helped that there was a quick concensus as to which printer to buy, so I didn't bother with further research except buying that one at a low a price as possible.

for those of you in the know on 3D printer...whats the estimated time to print a building at this quality level?

Also Orlanth - would be interesting to know what printer you got steered towards?

From the Kickstarter Page:

" You’ll need a printer at least with a 16x16cm sized bed to print out these pieces. These files work well with most of the popular printers, like Prusa MK2, MK3, Creality Ender 3, 5, CR10, TEVO Tarantula and other machines. We have a TEVO Tarantula and a Creality Ender 3 machine, both producing great quality at the $220 price range.

Time for printing and the quality of the final product is highly dependent on your printer and slicer setting. We printed these models at 0.16 layer height so we could show you a mid-range quality. One piece of the levels took around 8-12 hours to print, but printing time can be lowered if you print the models at 0.2 mm layer height. Some of the parts were printed at that quality and we could not see any differences, especially on painted models.

You can resize the files for wargames but you have to use glue at a smaller scale to assemble the pieces as you'll lose the hinges. "

As we keep hitting stretch goals the value here is getting pretty wild. Not counting ruined versions or towers we are already at something like 10 buildings with another about to unlock. Then add in the fact that unlike other creators these include damaged and undamaged roofs plus all the extra interior details, plus the ruined versions... this is really turning into something you just can't miss. The ability to print multiple versions of the same building, but with different roofs and other details make this a very versatile set.
We are almost sure to add one maybe even two more buildings!

I wonder how easy it would be to mod an stl file, so to print half a building, and join it to half another building. The sizes are semi modular already without the disadvantages of evident modularity.

I've been learning to scratch build my own 3d houses, but nowhere near this quality. I'll download the free one tonight and see how malleable it is.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

These are amazing, insta-backed.

I've been saying for months now that we need 3D models for fantasy terrain with more detail, given what modern printers are capable of - heck, I'd started to learn 3D modelling to do them myself - and these are exactly what I was talking about.

With a bit of care in tuning and settings, and some minimal post processing work, these would look right at home next to TTW's amazing resin buildings.

EDIT: Oh and "remixing" STL files is a complete doddle once you get used to the software. 3D Builder(native to Windows 10) is great for simple stuff and is literally chimp-simple to use, and for slightly more complex work there's Meshmixer - both allow you to define a plane through the model and "cut" it alone the plane(keeping either or both sides of the cut), Meshmixer allows you to get a little more in depth by also limiting what parts of the model the plane cut will affect. There's tonnes of YT tutorials for them. Then you can take any parts you have and merge them back together as you like.

I noticed the similarity between Tarok and Tabletop World. I still want some Tabletop World but could never afford it.

Is there a way for us to provide 'mods', adjust the stl files in such a way that you need the original to make use of it. If we can create our own mods then we can ask to upload changes of our own to the company website. It wouldnt hurt them if done this way.
Something along the lines of 'brick house stl mod, requires House #2 and Blacksmith files plus mod download to assemble'.

I like the idea of mods. I had no idea there were slicer programs that could glue meshs back together (my non technical understanding).

Well, kinda. If the additions are entirely your own, and you distributed only the additions, it could work, but frankly if someone can make a mod of sufficient quality that it would merge well into one of these models, it'd be quicker and easier to just make a whole building in the same style, for both the modeller and the end user.

And just for clarity - slicers don't do that Gallahad. 3D Builder and Meshmixer are both 3D modelling software, they're just very simple versions as opposed to something like Blender or Maya which will make you go cockeyed the first time you load up their UI

Yeah, had a look at it earlier. It's perfectly feasible to cut and shut the models but there's a few problems.
1) They are complex meshes, so you really need a computer with performance (I made a duplicate of the free model and my PC nearly had a dicky fit).
2) Cutting them up and shutting them together is easy, but there's no straight lines. If you want the merge to look good you're going to have to be pretty good at sculpting to make the join seamless. And if you can do that then you might as well be designing your own stuff.

Oh well, back to my home made low quality modular project.

Those look gorgeous. How does it work with releasing these at the conclusion of the Kickstarter? I see there is an estimated date of September 2019--will all the files be released at one time when they are all complete? Or will they be released as they are completed?

In the comments they've said they will release them as they are finished with the first being released after KS releases the funds and they finish adding in the alternative roofs which were unlocked as a stretch goal.
They estimate the first files will be in our hands about 4 weeks after the conclusion of the campaign.

As its a digital release this makes sense. why make backers wait give them individual portions as they are finalised.

One of the nice things is that even from day 1 the core six products plus the sample were done, so backers will not face disappointment if the project limped over the line.

Some of the stretchgoals are conept only, but that isn ot in any way unusual. September 2019 is a fair backstop estimate for stretchgoal completion, it might be be realistic if the project gets too many stretchgoals unlocked, but i cant see anyone complaining if there is a drip feed release.

Devs are due a payday, we have a safe project to back and if one or two items end up below the quality of the others due to unforseen circumstances so be it. i doubt it will end that way, but even if it does and some final stretchgoals don't make the grade I see zero cause to think we have a bad deal.

$60 for the six files is fair, generous even, $60 for what is around two dozen different building sculpts including ruins and variants is an insane deal. You can be charge $15-$20 for one file commercially of around this quality.

Ah ok then--seems reasonable. I checked the FAQ but not the comments. Been a bit since I kickstarted something so I didn't even think to check there.

I think they just got themselves another backer. I know I'm not buying a physical product, but I've seen how long it takes people to model things (well) in 3D so I have no problem paying them for their efforts!

Agreed. Backing this for just the base buildings was a worthwhile proposition, but with everything we're getting now? Ludicrous value.

I really hope these guys get into a rhythm of doing one or two of these on a different theme every year with a similar value proposition. Dwarf holds, Elven halls, Far Eastern towns, a modular dungeon/tunnel set designed for aesthetics rather than 1" square RPG layouts, a dock-town expansion for this core set maybe with some more appropriate ships(cogs, caravels etc, rather than frigates & ships of the line) than you tend to find elsewhere; there are loads of themes they could try, and with this kind of price & quality I'd have 'em all.

One of many who claimed to have backed this without yet owning a printer. The devs recommended the Ender 3 Pro, I dont know enough about that personally, but the advise was consistent from a fair number of people, though some recommended the Ender 5 for a larger print bed.
