It really just seems confused on it's role. Anything with weapons that close ranged is going to get into melee, yet it has abysmal WS and fighting ability for a knight and 0 protection from the torrent of powerfists/klaws, thunder hammers, monstrous creatures, etc. that will be hurled at it. If the harpoon had a cqc profile as a Flail or something we'd be talking, but as it sits all it really has going for it is that bonkers flamer, since the harpoon is swingy and the carapace weapons and melta can be found elsewhere for the most part.

Meanwhile the Castellan is pretty well focused for what it wants to do aside from the 4 meltaguns. It can sit comfortably at range and shoot or move around a bit to get sight on targets but doesn't have to enter melee range unless it wants to or you screw up. So where with the Valiant you don't get a lot of choice in where it goes since it needs to get close, the castellan has a lot of freedom to go wherever it's safest and still do it's job.

Even with the price bump I'd still pick a Castellan for the most part, but I'm sure there are cases where you'd want a Valiant, they just don't fit my playstyle.

Valliant is not a terrible choice to be heard - it has something things going for it. Number 1 - vallaints are great suicide missiles. 4+ to explode stratagem and you get 2 dice to explode. That is a lot of mortal wounds. Plus you should do some damage with shooting. Also it encourages you to use the melta guns so they aren't just wasted. Unfortunately the harpoon is epic garbage. It is yet to cause damage for me yet ever. 1 shot is absolutely useless in a game with command rerolls and invunes on practically every big unit.

given its such an expensive 1 shot gun i'd be fine with it bypassing invuls.
Even if it connects, it does max 13 damage (10 flat + D3 morts). And its range is the same as a lousy pistol. Quite frankly if anything with a valid invul even gets near that thing they deserve to have it stripped. Lot of other bug guns do almost that much pretty much guaranteed with decent odds at even more than that. At range.
