Hi all!

I'm having a crack at building up some squiggoths for my orks, and I want to try and make as good a list I can, built around a squiggoth aesthetic.

I plan on building:

Big Squiggoths (obviously) using the Index Xenos entry. I'm thinking either lobbas or kannons on their backs. lobbas are actually my preferred as they give the fire out of LOS utility which I will otherwise lack, and I can't see me relying on single-shot weapons like the zzapp gun, so would usually fire the kannon as frag, thus lobba is more powerful.
Gorka/Morka-squiggoths, counting as gorkanaughts and morkanaughts, they will be much more heavily armoured to stand out from the regular squiggoths.
Bigger Squiggoths, being Bonekruncha Battlewagons, which will have a lot of spikey-whirry death nailed to their tusks. Maybe even a deff-rolla between them, to enforce their role.

Basically anything I can justify using a squiggoth for. The index squiggoth is my main aim, plus a morkanaught-squiggoth with KFF to keep things alive. General aim is, obviously, to stomp across the board and smash everything. Squiggoths have a useful rule which allows you to shoot out of the howdah even if they are in CC, so I want to use that, probably bringing tankbustas or burnas in there.

Has anyone put squiggoths to much use? Am I better off avoiding the Index version and sticking with counts-as units from the codex? I'm also thinking of doing running smaller squiggoths with chariots as trukks, perhaps I can shoehorn one or two into the aesthetic as buggies, but that might be pushing it a bit!

So I've got a squiggoth and a gargantuan squiggoth, and I've used them both several times in 8th edition.

What I can tell you:

The most recent FAQ hurt them...a lot. This is perplexing because they really weren't that great anyway, but they were fun. Basically, you can't put mega-armored units in the gargantuan squiggith anymore, meaning the only way to get a Big Mek with KFF in there is to use an index entry (which is rarely an option) or the Mek Boss Buzzgob from Forgeworld, who has the Goff Klan keyword.

That Big Mek's 5++ is extremely important because otherwise, your squiggoth will die fast and in a hurry, so you'll need to pick up Buzzgob and run Goffs. The small squiggoth can at least carry Mega Armored models, so throw a Mega Armored Big Mek with KFF in there with a few Nobz or Meganobz and he'll be ok.

As far as guns, you WILL be advancing every shooting phase with your squiggoths, so I always run the cheapest guns I can on the Gargantuan Squiggoth. It's BS is so bad you won't hit anything even if you don't advance, so just take the cheapest, and remember you have to take two. Skip the guns entirely on the regular squiggoth since you're not required to take one there anyway. These things are basically Killy transports that take a lot of firepower to bring down (if they have the KFF on board) and can do some damage in melee if they get there, so use them accordingly.

All of that said, I had an absolute blast assembling and painting my Gargantuan Squiggoth and converting the howdah. I use the kill cannon turret from the battle wagon kit for the front cannon and a Zzap gun from the artillery kit for the rear. It was so fun and Orky!

Even with the drawbacks, I'd run the Gargantuan Squiggoth as a gargantuan Squiggoth because it is massive. Roughly the size of a Warhound. (A little smaller). You could use the smaller squiggoth as a battle wagon as its about the right size for one, so long as you converted the weapons appropriately.

personally gargsquig wise i dont see a reason to advance it 99% of the time.
It has no access to advance + charge, so you need 2 turns to move up and then charge anyway. Plus i'd rather the enemy screeners not charge ME first so not being 8" away but unable to charge T1 is fine for me.
Its occupants suffer more from the advance firing penalty than it does, since its basically only firing bigshootas (for SOME REASON it lacks the usual Big n Stompy rule). Gitz or Tankbustas are amazing in that thing since they can still unload the dakka while its in melee.
I would only give it 2 killkannons since it will never fire regular BS...ever...and the price difference between killkannons and the other 2 big guns is insane.

Never touched the regular squig but on paper it feels like a worse wagon. Its fugly model alone keeps me from getting one anyway.
