15-06-2019
Released today the Barbarian Tramplers, Crag Giant and Cavalry with Swords & Shields on Horses, and Cavalry with Bows on Horses. Also news on the Kickstarter 3 that they'll work through the new armies first working in three blocks, infantry, cavalry, large models. The idea being to spread out the production of each army into 3 stages so that the content drip feeds out for each army rather than coming in one big block per army. This is similar to how the KS 2 armies are rolling out and reflects that the way they release does end up with models going commercial before the KS ends. That said I should note the way their KS ships is that pledge mangers go back once, but content does get posted in in ad-hock waves based on what the person has ordered or in one big go (depending on user preference). This is abnormal for most KS, but is possible for BV basically because the number taking part is far fewer (eg ks 3 only has 108 backers so it can be more flexible than those funding with 100s to 1000s of customers)

12*09-2019
Orcian characters are now up for individual sale, that's 2 Mounted Captains, 3 Foot Captains, 3 Wizards, Thief, Assassin, Seer & Apothecary!

Has anyone tried their rules? How are they?

What other games/rules are good at this scale, barring down-sized KoW? I love some of these models, but can't think of what i'd do with them.

My group and I are trying the rules soon.
Very old-school rank and file feel, including early D&D themed spells, 2 shooting phases, and a nice variety of orders. The type of formation you opt to end
with also determines bonuses or effects.
Army building requires 2 troops, a cavalry, and a general. From there it is how you want to spend your points.
army building is flexible and if you use a pure force of one faction you get a nifty bonus.

The rule book is loaded with a plethora of forces, cool abilities for troop types, etc.
much of the basing is on square 40mm x 40mm for troops, or 40mm x 20mm for archers. Heroes and "Line breakers" (Ogres, etc.) are on 25mm rounds. I think monsters and a few others
are on larger.

We get our bases from the website or find a similar look like the company Renedra.

It seems like great fun, but I'll have to reply more after we see it in action.

I absolutely love rank & flank styles games, but not in 28mm. There is simply not enough room to maneuver and the epic scope is lost at higher scales.
It is beautiful view seeing massive armies in 15mm. Terrain is cheaper, and small games on 4' x 4' still feel big.

as for other games, remember the company sells Skirmish packs, so you can opt to do a solid system like Frostgrave in 15mm and play on smaller tables.

Hope this provides a bit of assistance.

You mention terrain being cheaper? What do you use? At this scale my only frame of reference is Flames of War, and I feel like that terrain is crazy expensive for how small it is.

Eh. Battlefront is essentially based on Games Workshop's model so their stuff is overpriced compared to everyone else. Also their terrain is pre-painted which jacks the price up.

i think Infinite Array nailed it, Battlefront I won't buy anymore their customer service is very poor.

a quick search online yields some good stuff, but as stated you'll be painting it.

Battle Valor makes really nice terrain in that scale too as you'll see on their site. Very fair prices for things like haystacks, ruined towers, walls, etc.
slopped hills and the like can be obtained from train / hobby websites.

I've been asking about terrain and in the world of 15mm the Battle Valor models are at the upper end of the size scale. So I've been advised to seek out more 20mm terrain features rather than pure 15mm (esp since terrain is often a bit undersized compared to models any way).

I'll definitely be giving this serious consideration. I'd buy the Battle Valor rules, but pdfs/digital versions are so much easier for me, and these guys don't seem to sell a digital version.

Any other good mass-battles systems I might want to try with these? Is Warmaster in this scale?

I think Warmaster was 6mm but it might well work - most of the games of this scale, from what I can see, share quite a similar backbone structure with formation moving units and there's a lot of swapping over of models to complete armies either for themes or to fit rule systems.

Their rulebook is some 200 pages long and includes all the stats for all armies for the game within it so its a single book rather than, say, like GW where its individual army books.

Oh that would be cool, yes. Warmaster is close -- just consider the base size and a few other mathmatical factors. The BVF rules actually have a bit of a warmaster feel, although there's more to it. I think the scale would work with some planning just fine. If you had any struggles, there are both 6mm and 15mm facebook and forum groups that would definitely be able to offer assistance in the transition.

Fully understandable, I'm taking more of a shine to them myself. Sadly I do not anticipate seeing his book in a digital version anytime soon, so I'm glad you are exploring other fun options for this range.

Gale Force Nine Battlefield in a Box are all prepainted terrain and incredibly cheap and great value for the quality. There's a reason their terrain consistently sells out.

I've encountered you a long while online Judge, and I respect your opinions a lot. So this is a clarification, not a criticism:

Note the wording of my post -- it was a customer service issue. Their prices are very fair for the quality, and I'm especially impressed with the Star Wars terrain GF9 / BF recently released.
But buyer beware, if something is defective that you purchase for Battle Valor or any 15mm game, their customer service was repeatably dismissive.

To no longer derail the thread, people are free to take their chances with Battlefield in a Box. I own a lot of it, and only had issue with one purchase. But I won't buy it again.

Back on to BVF -- who is acquiring the Siege Tower? It was my favorite item and I'm curious if people plan to incorporate it into their group.

I probably won't at this stage, if only because I will likely use most of my KS to build the core of a full army, that said I've got a year likely to wait until the Amazons are seen in metal and ready to order so I'm being patient on that front.

The other issue is that the siege tower seems backward to me, the mammoths are pulling it so I'm left wondering how they get it up to the castle wall - they should have had a pair pushing from behind so that it could slam into the wall.

Aye - attacking a marching army on the move (though in theory most armies didn't move siege towers, they carried materials for them and/or harvested them locally and built them on site because those things are huge, heavy and not going to move well over rough terrain and poor roadways. Of course if you've got 4 mammoths then pull away!!

I know these are 15mm, but has anyone tried them on Warmaster style basing (20mm x 40mm)? I really like some of these sculpts and wonder how out of place they would look against a 10-12mm army.

The BV models are often counted as being at the upper end of size for 15mm. They'll work on 2-4cm bases very easily (I don't yet have the book but I think 2x2 is the normal base for them anyway). but against 10mm or 12mm they might look overly large. You might get away with something like orks or such (ergo non-humans) but their overall scale and style of sculpt might not mesh well.

Though I've honestly never owned any warmaster to make a direct comparison.

I used to play Warmaster back in the day. These Battle Valor are quite a bit larger. You could certainly pick & choose a few choice figures for monsters or giants, etc, but overall I'm afraid BVF is heroic 15mm and my memory of warmaster is they were, "Very much" 10mm.

You could, however, use Battle Valor Fantasy minis exclusively with Warmaster rules, if all of your group appreciates the range.

I'll toss my recommendation in on those character packs. You get a lot of bang for your buck.

You've got the makings of a pretty decent Frostgrave warband all in one go as well as just about every standard fantasy character role covered.

Plus mounted models! Toss is a skirmish pack of infantry and you're basically set!

...I'm just having to wait for them to get around to the reptilian faction characters!

Poorly lit photos of my ever- growing collection of completely unrelated models!
