Is this a technique? It's becoming a fad now to wear the rattiest and stinkiest clothes you can to gaming stores or events. What ever happened to a shower and clean clothes?

Gaming stores are frankly worse. You are usually in the same room/area as the MTG crowd, which (where I play) is usually the sub-18yo crowd. They make it their job to be offensive to the senses at times. Honestly the best have been the Pokemon crowd. They are usually at least showered.

When did this become a thing? It's getting to the point that I had to stop a game, because the cheetos fingered reprobate I was playing against couldn't figure out deodorant apparently. Honest question: Who here games without being relatively clean first?

I shower, wear clean clothes, and put on deodorant before I go play 40k. However, if the room starts to get hot, and I'm standing around all day, but the end of the day I don't exactly smell like roses. I honestly think it's often a gestalt effect like that... everyone goes in smelling OK at the start, and as day goes on people start to stink, and by the end of the day it smells a bit funky in there.

edit - This assumes a 3 round 40k tournament, that generally takes 8-9 hours. There's no real excuse for showing up for a single game and stinking up the place.

snark aside, a lot depends on where you are gaming, ok UK here we don't have the same climate extremes, but even so, if you get a collection of people together in a badly ventilated space on a warm and especially humid day its not going to be pleasant by the end.

I get the point that some are not exactly helping matters at the start either.

guess its just part of "modern life" where any form of personal pride seems to be, for reasons that frankly escape me, "offensive" to some and the more shall we say "natural" appearance seems to be seen as something to aspire to

personally it comes down to a matter of simply being polite, not trying to have Foul Old Ron as an ally trying to make my opponents dice disintegrate.

some people will have, for a whole range of legitimate reasons, more of an issue here than others, and a lot more will claim they are "offended" if anyone dares to point anything out.

For me the main problem is one of there being no set standard, or any standard set not being enforced by whoever is hosting an event, allowing standards to gradually circle downwards.

as with everything in life, lead by example and treat others as you would wish they would take the hint and treat you in return, life is sadly too short to worry about it when there are space dollies to be played with.

most of the younger crowd grow out of this stage when they actually have to go out into the big scary 'real world'

You've been gaming since 2004 according to your profile and you're only just noticing this now???

Nerd stores attract nerds, some of which are incredibly stinky and/or socially maladjusted in some way. It, unfortunately is just one of those things no matter how much the community wants to rail against it. As will be seen ITT very shortly I predict.

Another thread for people to tell stories about those unclean Nurgle followers?

I don't know. The biggest example I could think about is a friend of mine that is pretty damm obese and he ends up sweating with his shoulder and everything after a full day tournament but he brings another t-shirt and deodorant so... is not like he stinks or anything.

Maybe is that the kind of stinky nerds don't go outside their house but in my FLGS we have never had a problem like this.

Of course I'm sure the owners will have a couple of stories because they are there all the time, and I don't. But isn't like, a substantail problem.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

Yeah this problem isn't anything new. Nerd culture in general is full of poor hygiene. Conventions tend to be the worst for this as people stay up all night, but any random gaming nerd has a chance of being Nurglesque.

There is no way a thread like this is going to stay inside the bounds of acceptable discussion, so let's just take it as read that some people have a poorer grasp on personal hygiene than others and that can cause issues when confined in small spaces, and move on, shall we?
