The 'repstarter' is a kickstarter campaign; but with the catch that I have absolutely none of the standard protections in place on a kickstarter platform? There's no real 'stretch goals', they just take my money straight off the bat whether the goal is hit or not. There's no third party holding the funds or providing checks. I place my desired 'pledge' through the shopping cart.
Sorry, but isn't this just a really convoluted and badly worded way of taking a normal commercial pre-order? Aren't the 'pledges' just purchases?
Yes - the main website calls it exactly that - a preorder system.
The crowd-funding aspect is that they'll be showing additional sculpts and if there's interest those will also become available for preorder along with the occasional freebie.
What standard protections beyond your normal credit card refund does kickstarter offer?
Don't they have a caveat that you're basically funding an endeavor and that it might fail and you might get nothing?
Considering a lot of the big Kickstarters are just glorified preorders with
KS and Amazon taking a cut of the proceeds.
I don't see this as any more dangerous than placing a preorder with an indie creator - with the added benefit that production is supposed to start immediately after the campaign ends - so if you don't see progress (molds and test sculpts) to your liking you can make a claim for a credit card refund right away instead of waiting 6 months to a year before you start to see potential for no delivery.
