The vast majority of my army is going to be Dark Angels. But, they are a gun line glass cannon kind of army, so I was looking to back them up with an IK (Paladin, Crusader, or Gallant). That said, the idea of a BA Smash Captain battalion and the loyal 32 seems fun as well.

Which do you think would be better for really any SM army? What about for a very gun line specific SM army?

I'd say Crusader personally.
If you're already got a heavy gunline, i'd maybe consider the gallant.

Knights really need to be fine tuned to the list they are supporting. Not all gunlines are the same.

Meh, just take a Knight Crusader. Great shooting, Great Assault.
