A mate is getting into Space Wolves. He is new to war gaming and loves the Fluff. Actually got me into reading the SW books.
So I did some research and tried to come up with a fun casual list that has the ability to (situation dependent) absolutely maul people. This list will be used as a guide for him to build towards.
He has said that he enjoys CC so I hope this list will satisfy that and not get tabled turn 2 every game.

Note: I made this list with Battlescribe, and relied on it to tell me if there were incorrect load-out rules etc, so if anything is wrong, It's because I don't actually have the codex.

Since he is a new player... I wil go ahead and say. Marine troop heavy lists struggle as of late.

My favorite cheap troop = 5 primaris with bolt rifle (back-line objective holders)

Grey Hunter load-out = 5 man, plasma gun, wolf guard with combui plasma - transported in razorback with twin lascannon. (these guys are goodto press forward and take objectives, but can be rather fragile.

Blood Claws x15, powerfist x3 with a wolf priest in a stormfang gunship (massive threat - needs to be protected by a Rune Priest...)

The star units for 8th are Wulfen, Wolf Guard bikers with storm bolters and storm shields (index only at this point), Rune priests with jump packs, named dreadnaughts (Bjorn more than Murderfang) and LongFangs.

Thunderwolves are so rarely better than Wulfen, I don't run them as of late.

I would agree, marines aren’t a particularly strong army but models and fluff are good and you can still have a good chance against quite a few lists. Uphill battle mind.

Most people seems to be taking primaris for their troops selection, infiltrators and intercessors. I use small squads of grey hunters or blood claws, I just use them to hold objectives and fill out my battalion. Wulfen are amazing but will attract every bullet in the opponents army. I don’t rate thunderwolf cav either, they look great but attract a lot of firepower and are quite weak against a lot of small arms fire. Only 3 wounds each and 2 attacks. I love dreadnoughts but they are not hyper competitive. Bjorn destroys anything he gets into combat with but again he only has a 3+ save. Same for murderfang and the axe and shield dreads. Forgeworld dreads are awesome but expensive in £ and points.i usually use two long fang squads, they are amazing when you add the stratagems. You can’t give special characters relics unfortunately

If you're using a Wulfen unit, the Stone becomes redundant. Take the Armour of Russ instead, and put it on a generic Thunderwolf WGBL for those sweet, sweet wound rerolls.

So taking into consideration what you all have been saying, we have been watching some SW Batreps on the Tube of you. I have incorporated some different ideas that we saw, with some concession on the fluff (Bikers over Calvary).

Hopefully with the changes he might be slightly more competitive, with the following.

Any better? I Hope he can get his CC fix and not get put out by the losses he will inevitably take. This is not Warhammer this is Thunderhammer!

Tactics: Njal and Termies deep strike. T2

WL keeps up with the bikes down 1 flank.

2 x squads of marines run down other flank, with Bjorn (not bad firepower with the re-rolls.)

And one squad spread thin across the center with the Wulfen behind, run up the middle.

Wulfens might need some kind of transport to get to the enemy. But only a stormwolf or a land raider could do the job, which require a lot of points.

Yeah I'm starting to think they (the wulfen) would be the distraction in this play-style, as if/when that biker-squad get in with the WL and all those Thunderhammers they will hit like a truck. so it does not really matter which squad gets there first they will both start deleting units. also remember that the opponent will have to be spread their lines thin to minimize that terminator deepstrike that also will hit like a truck, with the -1 to hit from Njal and the 3+ invul from the storm sheilds, the terminators become quite the treat.
From what I saw in the batreps, If you run a hard hitting termie squad the opponent has two choices let them come, or try to stop the deepstrike, by spreading thin, which dramatically reduces the impact of their auras and buffs.

I tend to outflank the Wulfen... don’t NEED a transport.
I use stormwolf to deliver Blood-claws instead.
Thunder hammers on bikers is expensive. Run them as Dallas with storm bolters and storm shields. If anything else, combi-plasmas...

The stormbolters made me think.
So I changed the bikes and added a couple intercessor squads.

One more CP, yanked from thin air. Also, your copy of Battlescribe isn't counting Bjorn's bonus CP for whatever reason.

Glad you went for the "Storm Bikers" They are great. Get them around some re-roll aura's and they are super annoying. I like the list.
