Looking at getting a second army and have my eyes on AM, as I like the models.

I am concerned play style may be to similar with lots of cheap disposable troops and was curious what others think. I have never played with or against them.

I run my orks as green tide, or speedwagh, and am working on getting a heavy armor bonebreaker/mork/deff dred setup now.

Im curious what the AM tactics are like? I assume tank gun line with guard chaff to keep the nasties away. Can you play aggressive with infantry or mechanized infantry?

Thanks.

I play Astra Militarum against my buddy's Orks pretty frequently, and I'd say they're very different, even if you can build them to play sorta similarly.

The most basic differences would be that Orks have a much heavier melee focus, while with the exception of Bullgryns pretty much nothing AM wants to be in melee. Plus Guardsmen are half the cost of Boyz as they rely on character auras to be effective. The choices of Kultur/Doctrine then further influence how they play- Bad Moons and Catachans play much more similarly to one another than Goffs and Tallarn.

You can run AM as an infantry horde, mixed tanks and screens, all armor, airborne, mechanized, or elite (Scions), and they're all reasonably viable, so you can pick whatever you think would contrast best.

I wouldn't overthink this. Unless you go out of your way to mirror the army composition of your Orks, they'll play differently on the table.

You can play IG a whole lot of ways. Armored company, mechanized infantry, a mix of these two, horde, airborne, gunline, etc.
If you want to play a very different army from orks while still using IG mechanics, play Militarum Tempestus. Better armor, shooting, weapons, and they play as an elite surgical strike and alpha strike army. Valkyries deliver your turn one alpha, Scions drop to provide support or punish misplays, Taurox Primes are gunboats that will take your infantry places once they’re on the ground.

Melee is not encouraged, but if your orky side still shines through, Scions best operating range is <9” to <12”, so you will always have that close quarters feel, but shooting instead.

If the truth can destroy it, then it deserves to be destroyed.

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys.

Im not looking to do a 180 exactly but my main opponent had me worried they would feel to samey, which got me worried. I had my eye on doing some Miltarum Tempestus, Cadian, or Catachans

Im glad to know they have different approaches that are viable, guess I better start working on that 200 page AM thread.
