So I spent probably too much money on a knackered rogue trader land raider and dumped it in some methylated spirits for 2 weeks and scrubbed and separated parts with a knife and it all came apart quite well, now to put it back together properly and paint it up for me Consecrators army

Can't wait to see what you do with this. As someone who predominantly "recovers" models, I saw the first pic and let out an audible "Oooof...".

That was some thick paint, lol.

Fortunately, that's all it seems to be. At least it wasn't some gunked up primer/plastic glue.

What's unfortunate is that the original Land Raider (as seen in this post) was popular, but there was an issue where the original mold was damaged or lost or somehow put out-of-action. So you couldn't buy one from the early 90's till around maybe 1999-2000 - whenever the current one finally came out.

So they went from buying two for like $30 (old school) to being rare as hens teeth even during 2nd edition. GW was aware, and even provided White Dwarf articles on how to convert some from WW1 tanks. It was a bit of a catastrophe. I'm not 100% sure on all the dates and details but the kit went missing. Hence there are not many of these in existence - ones in good shape are even more rare. Old rhinos and predators are pretty common. Land Raiders of this age though, fortunate to be found.

It was bizarre having the Datafax for the tank but being unable to buy it.

Wow, what craziness, I never knew any of that, thanks for the info.

I have another Land Raider that I rescued that was in worst shape but it is my original Land Raider my folks bought me back when I was a nipper, now I know how fortunate I was to get one!!!!!!!!

I'm sure some other, better informed grognard can provide all of the juicy details but the short version: the kit disappeared. Maybe someone will chime in with dates and details.

Did something similar happen to the original ork battlewagon? That went missing around the same time as the land raider and also ended up super rare during 2nd edition.

Reminds me of when I built mine, several decades ago now.

Defintely a lot simpler than the current versions.

Had one of these once, for about 10 minutes... School fete way back probably nearly 30 years ago had a group of kids running a warhammer painting competition. I just spent the entire fete painting an ork with a power klaw, and won the top prize of the Land Raider. Didn't play 40K at the time, I let the guy who came second have it for a tenner I think.

Awesome, dude! I look forward to seeing how this turns out.

I did one up myself a few years ago and had the project log up on Warseer. The log got lost when Warseer went down but I still got my Raider!

During that lull in models I actually commission built 8 Land Raiders out of bits and plasticard, using the Epic Armageddon model as a basic template. The new/current kit came out a few years after that.

Nice use of the Heavy Bolter bit!

What's the little viewport piece on the other side from the Heavy Bolter? I don't recognize it.

Awesome, I love that you're bringing it up to date - considering replacing the lascannons with modern ones, etc?

I already have another one I rescued that had to be updated with modern lascannons as the originals were too damaged. However on this one they are in good enough condition that I am keeping the original guns

Test fit with the completed side plates.

The Lascannons move just like they should, I forgot how loose they are though, hopefully paint will stiffen them up so I don't have to glue them in place. I have pinned the lascannons for strength though as the connecting piece of plastic is not very substantial.

Looking good. Great to see another RT Raider being brought back to life!

When I did mine I couldn't take it apart which restricted me quite a bit. https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/675583.page#9004517

You've done a great job bringing yours up to date too. Keep posting on progress.

Dark Angels/Deathwing - just getting started!
Space Marines - Stark Crusaders 4500pts/PL244 (2700pts painted)
Eldar - Biel Tan 2000pts
Space Wolves 1500pts

Thanks

You did a really good job on restoring your Land Raider considering the awesome battle damage it had sustained

Almost finished, just waiting for a searchlight and hunter killer missile and some more purity seals but it mostly finished, bar the paint of course.

The Lascannons are very loose, not sure if i could use some wax or something to make the joint stiffer, otherwise I might just glue them in place.

When in doubt glue them. Or mount them on a pivoting magnet mount, etc. The narrow pintle they mount to is the only eyesore to me on the old Raiders.

I completely agree, and was very tempted to rebuild the sponsons somewhat but in the end as I already have this other one I had to rebuild, my old RT LR from when I was a kid I thought I'd keep this one as stock as possible as it cleaned up so well.

And here are some shots of the other one

So much awesomeness.

I desperately want one of these, but I want to use it as the basis for a Ork Looted Wagon, so I can't justify paying heaps of cash on eBay for when when I'm just gonna kitbash it with a load of gubbins--but the ones that are in almost reasonable price ranges are so completely knackered that I'm not sure I could even loot them properly. They look like they were assembled with a soldering iron and painted with housepaint.

Looks like a fun project!

I love seeing classic kits restored, it is the collector car aspect of the tabletop! Better yet, seeing the new and old mixed, adds to the rich history of your army!

@Da Butcher, you might look into paper midels to feed the kitbashing, as it is the most affordable way to aquire out of production classics (or unique Grimdark versions of realworld armor like my "counts as Chimera" BMPs).

Looking good! Nice move with the exhaust pipes, those are one of my few issues with the old kit. I think I wound up gluing the Lascannons on mine, that joint is so tricky.
