I’m looking for an alternative game from my usual 40k gaming and want to get into a bit of fantasy skirmish gaming.

Ive ordered Frostgrave (And will probably order Shadow Deep). These look like great fun but a little much work to set up after a long day at work.

Firstly it’s important that it’s cost effective while also leaving me free to just use minis I think look cool, not what GW want me to buy.

Secondly; nice simple rules that don’t require lots of book keeping and scouring through massive rule books... something that I can pick up and play with a mate after work whilst drinking a beer but still lets me play a game with cool minis.

I haven't run it enough personally, but it is generally highly regarded among the non-Warhammer wargaming crowd. Loads of mods and versions of it I believe.

It meets your first and second list of criteria.
Not particularly deep and the magic isn’t super amazing
But it gets toys on the table with minimal fuss.

Song of blades and heroes is a fantastic ruleset. You should definitely give it a go.

Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes makes the magic spells much more interesting.
