Nottingham tabletop gaming firm Warlord Games is set to launch retail stores and studios along the east coast of the USA after agreeing a partnership with entertainment group Mythicos Studios.

The co-branded venues, named Warlord Mythicos Studios, will be designed to support the full array of games within the sector, including board games, collectible card games, role-playing and tabletop.

Mythicos' current studio in New Jersey will be re-branded as part of the "long-term relationship" between the two firms, with the first new branch set to open in New York in October this year.

The partnership will also include the co-development and manufacturing of new Mythicos games and expansions to current offerings from Warlord Games, which is headquartered in Lenton and has the BBC license to create Dr Who miniatures.

John Stallard, CEO and founder of Warlord Games, believes the new partnership will change the face of the hobby industry.

He said: "Everyone at Warlord Games is thrilled to partner with Mythicos Studios. Our companies share a dedication to our gaming communities. We seek to provide gamers of all types with the very best venues in which to enjoy their favorite aspects of the games they love.”

Mr Stallard's thoughts on the partnership were echoed by Mythicos' chairman and founder Nelson Martinez, who said it "will help Mythicos Studios expand our model of focusing on the gamers and the games they are so passionate about".

He added: "Our studios are not just places to shop, these are places where gamers will find the very best gaming conditions possible and all of the products and services any gamer (newbie or expert) will ever need to ensure he or she gets as much out of their hobby as possible."

Warlord Games was launched 11 years ago by a team made redundant from Warhammer creator Games Workshop.

Today, it creates and distributes its products around the world, with popular games including Dr Who: Exterminate! and fantasy series Beyond the Gates of Antares.

Moving forward, both companies are now aiming to establish Warlord Mythicos Studios in every major US metropolitan area, as well as a global presence for the brand.

So, i'm Creative Director for Mythicos, responsible for some exciting future endeavors, and these have indeed been some exciting times. That said, it is worth adding that the store isn't "new" per se, so much as being rebranded. The current NJ venue has been thriving for some time now, and is a joy to game at!

As the inside man, is this a deliberate commercial venture to begin mimicking Games Workshop's storefront strategy? That is to say, using shops to push primarily Warlord rulesets and cultivate local gamerbases for Warlord models? Or is it more of a 'we're partially funding an FLGS which also sells Warhammer and X-Wing to base a few tournaments at' sort of affair?

I'd absolutely visit one of these if they pop up close enough. Not a huge fan of Warlord's minis or rules, but it'd be refreshing to see a Historicals-friendly kind of gamestore.

Honestly.. . no, not remotely. As a player Mythicos has supported me running oddball stuff like Middle Earth GTs before it was "back", or Warmaster. They're supporting loads of Song of Ice and Fire. We've got a full timer running Gaslands weekly which we can't even monetize... literally.

The store was created by hardcore gamers who used fiscal successes elsewhere in life fund proper havens for every game. The Mythicos model is super pro-gamer. If I didn't work there, i'd still game there constantly, even with the 90 minute drive. :-p

I wish both parties good luck. I hope all goes well for you guys. Just curious, coming up to Canada as well or just sticking the US east coast?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

I wish them all the best luck!
Warlord has done so much great work over the last years, they created so many amazing games and miniatures. The rules are usually also quite nice.

And the price still is just a tiny bit above other historicals, but that is to be exptected.

VERY NICE

Errr.....I know you disagree with what I said, but I honestly have no idea what you are saying. I asked which of the two business models (solely Warlord, or just a normal FLGS which pushes Warlord stuff a little harder than it otherwise would do) the partnership was built around. Given that you say that they run lots of stuff for older/less popular games, I'm assuming you mean it's the latter model?

I mean, I'm assuming it's one of the above two. If it was just Warlord giving some prize support, it wouldn't be much of a business collaboration; let alone worth a name change.

Ketara: Closer to the later. Sorry if I wasn't clear. It will not be the GW "walled garden" approach to gaming/sales.

Will Mythicos be functioning as a distribution center for the USA?

Gaslands weekly which we can't even monetize...

I've wondered about that myself, having recently started playing and inevitably looked at it from an old sales/retail vet's POV. I had some thoughts..

- Rulebooks are self evident, and Refuelled is due in Sept.
- Carrying diecast, obviously. There might be scope to aim a little higher than Hot Wheels towards something with a little more detail and a more premium price if you're operating in a wargaming environment where people may be more accustomed to that level and cost of model, and also have a desire for something a little more detailed.
- Secret Weapon have, today, just launched a range of brass etch which looks pretty good, and they seem to offer wholesale, not to mention there's a bunch of options for diecast collectors out there (wheels and tyres mostly) and a bunch of small accessories and model producers who'd no doubt love a wider market (Ramshackle being a well known one to many Dakkites.)
- A curated range of weather powders, washes etc.. A lot of Gaslanders seem new to painting and wargaming, so something that was "for" their game might help.
- A 3D printing service. Theres a lot of stuff out there to print, tailored for the game or for the scale, but 3D printers, both FDM and SLA, are still a dark art for many, and require time effort and money that many won't wish to invest. There's obviously a license element when reproducing other people's work, but if perhaps you're renting out time on the machine and providing support, rather than the item, you perhaps will be doing enough to avoid any issues. Plus of course the limit isn't just for one game.

We find comfort among those who agree with us - growth among those who don't. - Frank Howard Clark
