If a baneblade with flamers, or some other long vehicle, is parked alongside a wall that is LOS blocking and an enemy model is on the other side, more than 8 inches from the edge, can the bainblade poke its track out to gain LOS but then measure range through the wall to claim its within its 8 inch range?
RAW
LOS is drawn from any point on one model to any point on the other model that is not interrupted, so LOS can be drawn from the track tip to the unit on the other side of the wall
Range is measured from hull (track) to base plate and so he can measure straight through the solid wall
Overall even though his LOS is from 10 inches away, he can fire because he is only a couple inches away through the wall for the purposes of range.
Seems bunk but thats my reading of it.

This is the way RAW works on it, yes. It's weird, and so is a multi-model unit gaining LOS from a single model peeking around a corner, but thems the rules.

Note that LOS for a multi model unit is done on a model to model basis. If the flamer model is in range, but has no LOS, because its behind the wall, it cant shoot.

Perhaps a better way to word it would be, to gain vision is model by model, to be seen is as a unit?

No, units dont shoot, models do. LOS is always on a model to model basis.

When shooting, each model needs its own LOS.
When being shot at, only a single model from the unit needs to be visible to the enemy model.

About the initial question, that's also how I understand the rules, even though it's quite silly.

It’s not silly, it’s an abstraction that gives an absolute result. No arguing about where you’re measuring to and can you see that part. Can you see? Yes/no check. Range is always closest to closest to avoid arguments. Keeps life simple to avoid arguments and slowing the game down.

Really? Then my Admech buddy either played me for a fool, or Kastellans have special rules. He managed to get LOS on one of my Lootas with a single Kastellan, and told me that if one has LOS, they all do.

Yeah that's not true. When shooting, each shooting model needs their own line of sight. What he said does apply for when you're being shot at, if all the Kastellans can see one loota out of 15, they can wipe out all 15.
