I'm wanting to do a Star Trek RPG game that mainly consists of each player having their own star ship and using that a lot during combat. However, I don't want to pump $100+ into Star Trek adventures unless I know it's worth it. What's everyone's experience with that game or is there another system I can use?

If you want to go cheap, I'd pick up the PDF's for the game...that said, you don't need to drop 100$ on the game. All you need is the core book. Everything else is added content that you don't need unless you want it.

That said, we have a thread for it over in the RPG section of Dakkadakka. The game is great fun, and the quality of the system seems to be good. I'm running a game in two days set in the TOS era and I'm quite excited to see what my group thinks.

I do custom ship writeups for fun on my blog but unfortunately I have yet to wrangle up enough folks at one time to actually play my first in person game. My advice is get the intro adventure pdf (I think there is a free adventure but it's been a while since I last checked) and see if you like it in practice. Playing in a Star Trek rpg is supposed to be a radically different feel than the typical murderous pillaging hobo campaign you experience in other games; players have to be aware and happy with that from the get go. Regardless, as Togusa mentioned, we have a thread over in RPG where a few of us discuss the game.
