So, now that the dust has slightly settled on contrast paints.

I've got 10 Deathwing Terminators and 23 Genestealers to paint up for Space Hulk 4th edition, among other models waiting to be painted...

Anyone think (or know) if it's possible to get a good look to Deathwing Terminator bone coloured armour, compared to a traditional layer/shade wash technique, using contrast paints?

How well does using contrast paints sit with the rest of a model being done using normal GW base/layer paints?

The Genestealers. I saw a guy using Magos Purple and Akhellian Green (which actually seems to be a blue?!) over a white undercoat. Both seemed to be too translucent, i.e. too much white showed through, using just 1 un-thinned layer.

I'm aware that some contrast paint colours are more opaque than others, so Is there a slightly more opaque purple and blue that would suit painting traditional purple/blue Genestealers for Space Hulk?

I've seen Leviadon Blue and Shyish Purple used, but they both look too dark, and the blue has a kind of purple tint to it. So not good for Genestealers in Space Hulk imo.

Would a 2nd layer of Magos Purple and Akhellian Green, perhaps thinned, solve the problem with too much opacity?

I ask because I don't really want to be spending money on paints, at £4.75 a pot, if they won't work for me, and I know by now you guys out there will probably know more than the staffers in my local GW...

Thanks all in advance

Wraithbone makes an excellent basecoat for Deathwing but I haven't shaded mine yet. I think I am going to try Skeleton horde thinned with Contrast medium. Warp lightning for green decorations, Blood Angels for bolter casing, Basilicanum Grey for Crux Terminatus. I think I also used Basilicanum Grey To paint armour joints, exhausts and other details.

That place is the harsh dark future far left with only war left.

Belfast

My terminator bone was done by priming grey, then drybrushing kommando khaki, then graveyard earth then dheneb stone then skull white. Then a heavy wash of devlan mud and then a final dry brush of dheneb stone.

For the Lion and Terra!

Because nothing in the galaxy is black and white, Mankind views the Space Marines as a last resort. The last line. When all else fails. They take up the burden. The noble defenders of Mankind. The last hope.

With finecast you can bypass the washing stage and throw them straight into the bin.

Or cut out the middleman and just flush some money down the toilet.

My first reaction to contrast paints was relief. My daughter is using a tyranid army and we have about 150 models to paint for a 1000 point army. On the demo day a week before the pints came out I experimented in store with a couple of plague bearers and painted them in what I guessed would be roughly hive fleet hydra colours (to match the box on space hulk 1st edition which is how old my models are).

I settled on wraithbone undercoat, volupus pink and magus purple, kinda wet blended with the purple in the darker shadows, and ultramarine blue for the carapace. It looked pretty good on the plague bearer and will get a horde on the table pretty quickly with just those colours I think. Then in slow time I can go back and highlight and detail each one individually until I die. I should get half the army painted by then.
