wondering if anyone knows a decent 1930's - 1940's era skirmish game?

ideally something that allows personalisation of hero types or leaders with personality traits, has some level of interaction outside actual combat (e.g. a bit like Sharp Practice), sort of two/three squad level with maybe a bit of support.

most games I've seen tend to be aimed at borderline RPG so a small group of models at most, or larger scale stuff like chain of command that while very good is a bit of a large force and lacks the personalisation side to it

thoughts?

Pulp Alley

Possibly- A World Aflame

I am not sure of the core rules but A Very British Civil War may also be of interest to you.

Myrtle Creek, OR

A vote for Pulp Alley.
You can even try the core mechanics of the rules for free.
It has cards in addition to the dice (d6 through d12 range).
And the PDF download is only $11 if you want to print your own copy.

I’ve got pulp alley, looks amazing fun but forced on the small side.

Ironically VBCW is the sort of theme being aimed at, played locally using Bolt Action which lacks the flavour desired. Will have a look at the actual rules though and see

Ditto a world aflame

Many thanks

Was there an actual set of rules under the Very British Civil War name? I thought it was a setting, leaving the choice of rules up to the players.

The last Warhammer Legends of the Old West supplement had a few pages on tweaking those rules to cover various other periods, from the French & Indian War up to Prohibition in the 20s; the Lord of the Rings rules therefore might be a place to look, although you'd need to do all the legwork regarding army lists and stats yourself.

I'm informed there is but haven't seen it anywhere, apparently those behind the setting are more than happy for people to play anything.

have now tried A World Aflame, as a game its ok, and for the price have ordered it - it is however really a bit on the large side by default and while the NCOs get slightly different ratings - which matters in combat, it seems to lack the out of combat stuff, which is a pity.

may end up mucking about to take Sharp Practice and update it to the desired period, probably with the Chain of Command ranged combat system and sticking everyone as 4-6 man light infantry or skirmish teams
