The local lcub is rebrewing inrest into 40k, so I'm dusting off the ol' Imperial Guard, which books do I absolutely need?

I got the core rules, AM Codex, and the 2 Index they released at first, and some command cards too.

Well, you have the bare minimum for what you want, but as BCB will likely point out very soon, there are a lot of supplementary books which can enhance your play. You'll want to look at the latest FAQs for the Core Rules and AM, and will probably want to get ahold of CA18 as well.

you've got what you need, you'll wanna grab the errata https://www.warhammer-community.com/faqs/ but thats all you need. there's some additional fun stuff for IG in Vigilus defiant but it's just some optional special detachment rules.

and yeah Ignore BCB. he'll tell you that 87 documents are required to play, but he's full of it.

Actually it's 94
Said documents are required if the OP wants to be able to play every single possible model in 8th ed or know the rules of every single possible model they may go up against. They likely won't want to though, so it's safe to ignore. Chapter approved is probably the only other book they need, unless someone else has it.

You essentially have three facets to each codex:

1) The actual codex itself.
2) The most recent FAQ/errata document (available free on Warhammer Community)
3) Updated points in the latest version of Chapter Approved (in this instance Chapter Approved 2018).

You can normally get away without buying a copy of Chapter Approved since you mainly just need the points update for your codex - something you can snap a picture of, or the group can invest in one copy and you can make notes or copies of the necessary pages.

The rulebook is a little more complex:

1) The rulebook.
2) The FAQ/Errata and "BIG FAQ" (a semi-annual update to the rulebook) all available from Warhammer Community as free PDFs.
3) Chapter Approved occasionally has some rules changes, but these are included in big FAQs normally as well.

Any campaign or expansion books (such as Vigilus Defiant) are just that...expansions. Like above, each book will have an errata/FAQ document on Warhammer Community if needed.

The best option is to make a cheat sheet for yourself where you can compile all of the rules and points changes into a document you keep on hand. This way you can edit and print off a new one as the game changes. The game changing and being fixed as it goes along is nice...but it leaves a big confusing paper trail if you're just hopping in. It's not as obnoxious as a lot of people make it out to be (the people who raise a huge fuss over this aren't actually playing the game, just exaggerating to try to prove a point - ignore them and ask people who actually play the game for real advice).
