Just read The Anphelion Project (Imperial armour 4) and in the story the imperials were shocked to find out tyranid mutated on order to overcome obstacles. In this case they evolved wings and burrowing skills to get out of a containment zone and underneath or over a fence.

Now, the flying hive tyrants are mentioned a couple of times. There is also a some mentioning of the burrowing Nids but when it comes to specific species only Raveners and Trygons are mentioned. Is there any reference in the Tyranid fluff to burrowing, trygon-like Hive Tyrants?

Asking this because I don't like the legs of the walking Tyrant at all and this built a trygon-like Hive Tyrant. Thus one without legs bit with a longer tail.

The Tyranid Swarm evolves on a level that GW's production team could never keep up with. There are countless variations of Tyranids out there in the universe and what we see from GW are only the most commonly seen, along with a couple of super-powered rarities (like the Swarm Lord).

Otherwise go mad! If you want a serpentine hive tyrant - go for it I'm sure if you google it you'll find more than enough examples of people having done the same conversions. Sure it might have line of slight issues (unless you bury part of the lower body then it will be taller than normal) but it would certainly stand in well for a regular hive tyrant without any issues.

Remember Anphelion Project also predates much of the current tyranid range.

Burrowing synapse has since become 'a thing' in the form of the Trygon Prime.

I tend to suspect that the tyranid units in the codex are simply the most common general xenoforms seen in a Tyranid invasion, but that every actual tyranid invasion is slightly differant as the hive fleet evolves and shapes their units for the exact enviroment it's dealing with.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Running Jormungander alows you to bring a lot of models up through tunnels, and there may be some additional fiction supporting more burrowing units in the Jorm fluff.

For games, just pay the points for a Tyrant with wings, since all you're looking for is the ability to Deep Strike and ignore terrain. Tyrants with wings are pretty tall, too, so a tall Tyrant with a Trygon body is perfect.

Thanks for the comments. I built it yesterday an it is a little taller then my flyrant when without wings. So actually quite tall.

The Tyranids are the single most malleable species known to mankind. It is not an exaggeration to say that any variation or combination of traits is possible within the Tyranid race. Even in the art, there are a lot of "what is that?" situations that are basically just explained by the fact that Tyranids can create unique or specialized organisms on the fly. The main species we see are just the most successful products of their bioengineering, and they're constantly stirring the pot of evolutionary soup for the next success story like the Zoanthrope or Carnifex.
