Demons Souls. Dark Souls. Dark Souls 2. Bloodborne. Dark Souls 3. Sekiro: Shadows Must Die.
And now a new title, a new IP: Elden Ring. They've invited George R. R. Martin to participate in writing the backstory for the game, comparing it to someone "writing the Dungeon Master's Guide on how to tell the tale of the setting".
"Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the Elden Ring mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration,” said Hidetaka Miyazaki, game director on Elden Ring, in a press release. “The team is working hard to ensure that the world of Elden Ring will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.”
“Building the world of Elden Ring with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat!” said George R.R. Martin. “The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what Elden Ring has in store for them.”
Didn't see a thread discussing this. It's gotten me on a massive Fromsoft game kick lately. Looking forward to it.

A bit surprised to see George working on something that sings so much of Tolkein-esque fantasy, but maybe he's shooting for subversion. Interesting. I got into Dark Souls late, so if they're making a new trilogy or running IP I'd be interested.
Yeah this is a big more high fantasy than he usually envisions.

That movie above was hardly any more involved than any of the intro movies to any of the three Dark Souls games, though.

Yeah, the minimalism is a big part of what made Dark Souls compelling imo. I'd be surprised if they completely absconded with it in a game that basically screams spiritual successor.
Quite excited for this. George R R Martin involvement is bit of a novelty rather than the main appeal for me. I hope for another DS esque title really. Im happy with a spiritual successor. Tbf I have bloodbourne on my ps4 I am hesitant to start(because I fear a giant dive down a time stealing rabbit hole of addiction!)
I got into DS pretty late. (DS3). One of my biggest regrets is giving up on Demon Souls.
@ DABA Regarding Armored Core -
I remember watching this back in 2017 but have not heard anything since.

Joking aside, I actually very much enjoyed (prefer) Dark Souls' minimalist way of conveying their story. I'm not sure what I feel about this.
It looks pretty though.
I like it a lot. However, I don't want it to become to new norm for storytelling. It works very well for the game. I don't think it would work well for a game like Fallout.
However, I do think there is a happy medium between the two and I hope other publishers see Dark Souls as an inspiration in storytelling. Just not something to attempt to imitate.
LOOKING AT YOU KOJIMA

I could definitely see games using minimalist tricks for world building. It’s an excellent way to get people thinking about things without lengthy side quests or info dumps.
Sure, but just remember that minimalist indicates there is a minimum that needs to be met. Each of the Dark Souls games did this in a different way in their intro segments, as did Demons Souls and Bloodborne. Each one set the tone for the game at the start, and did it in a way to keep the player's interest, not just dumping them in the wilderness.

The GRRM thing seems like a marketing gimmick. Probably a case of "let's write GRRM a fat check to get a few paragraphs of world building out of him, and to use his name in our promotional material."
Still look forward to learning more about this game though.

I did a Google search trying to confirm what you said and couldn't find anything. Where did you hear it'd be an Epic exclusive? That would be extremely surprising for such a high profile game.

No it's not.

I don't think so. I doubt they'd hamstring their profits doing an exclusive on a platform I have never heard of before until now. Then again maybe I've been living under a rock...

Epic is the Chinese-owned store that mostly makes its presence because of Fortnite. They're trying to bribe devs with lots of money to release exclusives on their store.

For whatever reason, my newsfeed brought that up the other day (under the topic 'Elden Ring'), and I took it at face value. As it turns out, that was wrong- Elden Ring is just in a linked article.
Apologies.

(a store notorious for its lax security, with people getting their accounts stolen regularly, even though it lacks such fundamental things as a shopping cart to buy more than one item at once; but I digress, this is getting off topic now)
