So given that the HH mechanicum don't look to be coming to 40k anytime soon I've been looking around at the codex's to work out how best to represent them, adeptus mechanicus are a terrible fit funnily enough due to severe lack of units/options after a bit of a search I felt that Tyranids were the best fit due to a mix of rules that with a simple name change work well (synapse, cortex controller) and mid level BS with good ish shooting.

So what do you guys reckon?

Rewrite the 30K rules for the current 40K. No easy fit with existing 40K codices.

Will depend on finding players willing to play with a non-standard non-GW codex.

Fluffwise, could argue either an ancient overlooked Mechanicum world that somehow was isolated or escaped. Or the finding of a vault with a few 30K Mechanicum units in storage/stasis pods. Could even use the rationale of archeological research by the Adeptus Mechanicus re-discovering how to produce some of the old stuff on a very limited scale or with other factors to explain why it doesn't get widely adopted again. The handcrafted creations of an innovative Techpriest who gets condemned as a Heretek maybe.

I could re write rhe rules fairly easily as you say but you know how some people can be with homebrew rules, that is why I was looking for a counts as army, problem is they are so radically different from Tyranids it would get confusing, my biggest problems are the tanks and thallax/castellax, the thanatar can easily represent some large oval base tank/monster.

Wish FW would just pull their fingers out and hurry up

The conversion shouldn't be too hard considering 30K really is just a variation of the current 40K rules, not a completely radically different system, so there should be less of an obstacle to players accepting it vs. some homebrew conversion from another game or universe.

Can also if need be include extra points tax or hard limits on numbers to represent rarity if people are still hung up or concerned about risk of being overpowered or imbalanced.

A little left field but what about Craftworlds. Tanks are easily swapped for falcons, thallax for wraithguard and the thantar possibly the wraith knight. Easier for people to see what's what and less of a stretch than having a mechanical Tryanofex.

I use the following easy low effort swaps:

-Thallax are Infiltrators or jazz hand priests
-MMyrmidons are Battle Servitors
-Triaros is drill
-than a tar is a Onager
-Castellax are punchbots
-Vorax are shootbots

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Domitar make great punch bots, castellax make great shooty bots, myrmidon make great kataphron, etc. I actually think they can be proxied well aside from some of the armor like karacnos.

Eldar is a good shout and I did not consider that, I will have a little dabble and see.
