I've posted in here because it's a noob question.

If I have a Chaos Space Marine army, and I have 2 separate detachments of CSM, one black legion, one renegade, could a HQ unit in the black legion detachment give bonuses to a renegade detachment?

This belongs in 40k YMDC, however, the answer is "no", unless the HQ has the proper keywords.

So, let's say you have a Black Legion Battalion (let's say a Chaos Lord, Sorcer, and three units of Chaos Space Marines), and an Alpha Legion Battallion (Chaos Lord, Sorcerer, three units of Cultists, and Obliterators). Let's assume that all the units in each detachment have the same <Legion> keyword.

In this case, you just read what the datasheet says. Since the Chaos Lord's text says "reroll all hit rolls of 1 for friendly <Legion> units within 6 inches", then the Black Legion Chaos Lord's ability really says "reroll all hit rolls of 1 for friendly Black Legion units within 6 inches". That means the Alpha Legion Obliterators from the other detachment won't be affected.

As was said, read your Abilities. Some provide Buffs to ALL friendly models, while others are Chapter/Legion/Kultur/Whatever specific.

So that can't happen.

Yes. Keywords don't care about detachments.

Ok thanks, I'll have to make both detachments the same Legion. I won't go into the details but I'll end up having an exalted champion in a separate detachment to about 16 Berzerkers, the bonuses from that outweigh tailoring separate legion traits to each detachment.
