Hey all,

Some friends of mine play and I'm getting into the hobby, have build my first few units and started learning to paint.
Playing Death and I'm using the popular Dragon Blades proxy as my Blood Knights - going for Mephiston red armour and have done a bone coloured trim on them.

I'm looking to do a reddish/pink colour for the cloth/streamers, like the wing membranes in the two examples here, particularly the second one with the lighter colour towards the edges:

I know from the owner of the first picture that it was based white and then simply many layers of carroburg crimson with a little bit of nuln oil + bloodletters.
I can do that for my own lord's wings, but for my knights streamers, I reckon it won't work as well using just shade rather than going with the normal process which seems to be prime -> base -> shade -> layer -> highlight

So the question essentially is, what base and layer paints in combination with carroburg do you reckon would get me a similar result to those wing membranes?

I would base coat with screaming skull or ushabti bone (i.e., creamy white) then add the carroburg to carroburg+nuln.

Hm, so you think base screaming skull, wash with carro+nuln and then layer up with carro? Not sure how I would get the lighter colour for highlight.

To clarify, the cloth parts on the model here (not mines) https://i.pinimg.com/originals/52/d6/b4/52d6b41dd5382dd9a4139fd1d1f7df2b.jpg, underneath the horses head and the riders boots, is the parts I'm looking to paint in the colours of the membranes mentioned earlier.

Would that work with just base+shades?

In my experience, after screaming skull base + wash in recesses, I usually end up with a thick layer of wash in the shadows, a thin layer of wash over most of the middle areas and a light layer of wash over the raised areas and edges. Then I can simply use the base again (in this case screaming skull) to highlight the raised areas (after the wash dries). Most of the time I even have to mix a little of the wash back into the screaming skull to darken up the highlight before I apply.
