Okay, first of all this may be wishful thinking or grasping at straws, but please approach this with an open mind.

What is the sequencing for an ork army with regard to SaGs and or Zzap Guns?

In both these cases the gun requires a variable strength to be determined before firing, however firing is never defined anywhere in the rules, shooting is, but not firing. Now I know that many if not all of you will equate firing= shooting but is that the case, variable fire weapons are rolled at stage 3 number of attacks, but at what point is str determined?

Do you;

a- roll str before choosing target on the basis that firing =/= shooting
b- roll str after target declared but before knowing number of shots
c- after rolling to hit but before the wound rolls on the basis of Schrodinger. You don't need to determine the value until you reach the stage of needing it. As is the case for variable fire weapons.

For example an obvious benefactor in this would be rotate ion shields. A knight would be a lot more likely to RIS against a Str10 attack than a Str2 attack? In the same way an ork player is more likely to prioritise targets based on what str they rolled.

Would like to hear dakkas' thoughts on this.

Cheers

Andrew

Shokk Attack Gun
Each time this unit is chosen to shoot with, roll once to determine the Strength characteristic of this weapon. If the result is 11+ each successful hit inflicts D3 mortal wounds on the target in addition to any normal damage.

1. Choose Unit to Shoot With
In your Shooting phase you can shoot with models armed with ranged weapons. First, you must pick one of your units to shoot with.

In step 1 of the shooting phase you roll for the strength of the SAG.

Zzap gun
Before firing this weapon, roll to determine the Strength of the shot. if the result is 11+ do not make a wound roll - instead, if the attack hits it causes 3 mortal wounds. The bearer then suffers a mortal wound.

Before firing this weapon is any time in the shooting phase before step 4, where you roll your attacks. So the knight player wouldnt know the strength of the weapon (and neither does the ork player), because RIS has to be played when a knight is targeted, which happens before step 4 of the shooting phase.
