It might take three layers or more but the key is to keep it thinned down so building up layers doesn't cover up detail. It might take some patience. I'd say it covers better over a grey undercoat.

Paint a light brown on first, yellows will look much better given a black base coat.

Or you can try mixing the first layer of Averland with brown color.

No. You need a lighter basecoat first. I use a beige, but brown will work too.

Yeah it will, you just need 2 to 4 coats. You could paint 1-2 layers of brown first and then 1-2 layers of Averland sunset, or just do 2-4 layers of Averland Sunset if that's what you're trying to achieve.

Averland Sunset has pretty good coverage, if that's actually the colour you want**** I don't think there's a huge benefit building up layers of brown first (especially given most browns take 2 coats anyway).

The idea of layering browns first comes from other yellow paints that have poor coverage and would probably take 10 coats over black to get you anywhere.

****I say "if that's the colour you want" because perhaps you want to use the brown as a shade colour, but if you're just trying to get a solid coat of yellow (e.g. to wash or drybrush layer) then I don't think you need the brown, just accept that it'll take a few coats.

It works. But it takes a lot of time and effort to get right. I painted my Eschers for necromunda like that. Yellow over black.

Averland sunset is the base for yellow, I use it flesh and whites if they are on rich/ dark undercoats

Maybe a bit late to the party:

As my army is from Averland, I painted over ~300 models in the yellow-black colour scheme known for the province. The yellow is a SOB to paint.

(here's them: https://kingsofwarvince.business.blog/2019/07/09/overview-of-my-completed-armies/)

A lighter base colour will help out in the yellow department, but even so your colour needs a build up. The yellow will not cover a lighter undercoat in one go, so you'll be needing several as well.

As I needed a lot of men, I wanted to use a black undercoat. (much more forgiving) When I still used GW colours, I used Plague Brown as my first colour over the black undercoat which I highlighted averland yellow, shaded them with a thinned down brown in and finally highlighted them averland yellow again.

It does work. It looks remarkably well for uniforms, as it's a really bright yellow. Here's the effect on a horde-level unit:

yes it does but you'll need a few coats. Painting brown underneath can also work speed it up but I don't bother anymore and just do the second layer a little bit thicker. .
