Subject: Does the Imperium just have Haywire stuff now?

Haywire, AFAIK, was something unique to the Eldar races. Harlequins have Haywire Cannons, Drukhari have Haywire blasters and grenades. the weapon tip is like a crystal with a curvy claw around it.
But I was just looking at some of the new primaris stuff out of curiosity, and it seems the spacemans have a new weapon called a "Haywire Mine."
Is there any other weapon named Haywire in the imperial roster? Or will we be seeing "Pulse blasters" and "Shuriken Slicers" in the next range of Primaris stuff?

Yeah I feel like that weapon was miss named. Should have been an Arc mine.
Admech has oodles of arc weapons so it's within the realm of possibility but more like they named it wrong if I had to guess

nothing else I'm aware of named haywire but a few things have been described in both rules and fluff to have a haywire style element. The neutron lasers used by ad-mech and the older 30k brothers on the sicaran venator through to the falchion have all been stated to have an electrical feedback element that can disable systems for a short amount of time on even titans.

They've always had Haywire Grenades in the fluff, so mines coming out isn't so odd honestly.

Yeah, back when Haywire was a USR the imperium had some "Zappy weapons" that had it. They just tended to not be called "Haywire".
I just found it odd considering how much GW has quintupled down on the Brand Terminology in recent years.
Every new Tau weapon is named some variant of "Pulse", "Rail", "Fusion" and "Ion."
Every new Imperial weapon is a variant on the Lascannon/Autocannon/Boltgun/Plasma Gun/Gravgun
Every new ork weapon is some combination of the terms "Shoota" "Kustom" "Snazz" and "Dakka"
They've been REALLY cautious about solidifying their branding post-chapterhouse, and being able to show a distinctive naming and style when it comes to variation is an important aspect of that, legally. It's why no matter how many squillions of variations on Bad Guys in Plate Armor you see in star wars, they're always going to be recognizably "A Storm Trooper."
Just another wonderful feature of this capitalist hellworld we live in, I guess. New ideas must be introduced with the utmost caution, and ideally with numerous variations on the same theme already extant in multiple places in the release to help solidify the brand. That's why we had five different units with "taser" type weapons and three with "Arc" type weapons coming out simultaneously in the admech release.
It just surprised me to see such an obvious branding slipup from GW, where that's almost always the only thing they have on lock. Especially in the release that's basically the "Iphone 17" of 40k. Automatically Appended Next Post: ZebioLizard2 wrote:They've always had Haywire Grenades in the fluff, so mines coming out isn't so odd honestly.
Yeah, but "They" has always only ever been Drukhari and Harlequins. Not imperials. The Plasma Grenade and Haywire Grenade were the Eldar equivalent of Frag and Krak.

I want to say that Zebio's right, but I can't remember exactly where it's at--but I'm 99% sure that there has been mention of Marines having Haywire Grenades in fluff. It just never really made it into the game proper. It might have been in the Deathwatch RPG as a "rare item" styled deal? I don't have those books anymore sadly so can't check. Pretty sure there was an actual "Haywire Cannon" in there too.

Wargear with the Haywire USR was present in Imperium units before this.
The Rogue Trader RPG had haywire grenades, but they were incredibly rare.

Haywire stuff being Eldar-only was a 3rd edition retcon. Imperial forces certainly used it in RT and 2nd edition.

It doesn't make sense for only Eldar to have EMP weapons anyway.

I'm talking about current-era faction branding, not old school "Eldar Guardian with Lasgun, Space Marine with Shuriken Cannon" stuff.
You don't think it would be weird for a new Tau suit to come out with a random lascannon poking out of its crotch and there's just no explanation for it? Automatically Appended Next Post: CthuluIsSpy wrote:It doesn't make sense for only Eldar to have EMP weapons anyway.

No, and in the OP I pointed out that there are multiple imperial "Zappy weapons" that used to have Haywire back when it was the name of a USR. But they're usually called "arc" or "Taser" while the Necron zappy weapons are called "Tesla".
I'm not up in arms about it, just noting it as a weird branding error to happen in an era where GW has slowly lowered their brand into a vice and every year they spin it round a crank and sell whatever comes out.

Honestly, this is just one of those things--sometimes stuff from the fluff ends up showing up in a new bit and it seems wonky.

Fair enough. I guess someone at GW didn't know that Haywire was an Eldar naming convention then.
Or maybe the implication is that the Primaris nicked some Eldar tech.

The same reason that Eldar seemingly can't make boltguns or assault cannons.
The argument goes both ways - just as the imperium used to have access to all sorts of weapons, so did everyone else.
Hell, Orks all carried bolters until 3rd ed....

You know, I never thought about that.
The Imperium has plenty of lowercase-haywire causing technologies, IIRC like half the AdMech/Skitarii codecies had the haywire property, and a few other things (Gravy Guns, IIRC?)
That's said, calling it capital-H-Haywire does seem to be an Eldar thing. There were Haywire Grenades, though, so this is probably a mine-type version of that.
