Hello, just wondering, what kind of camera are you using to record your painting tutorials/videos?

I want to improve my quality and have budget of up to 1000$

Should I go for DSLR with autofocus? Aby tips will be appreciated!

A DSLR should be fine. I would also set aside some of that cash for a tripod, a decent light box & some studio lights, like the following:

& maybe a trigger release for the camera (it's a remote switch for making the camera take a picture without touching the camera).

Also some photo-editing software.

Finally, a lot of people will tell that you need a 'macro' function to take close-up pictures, but I find I get less parallax distortion using a zoom lens from about 1m away.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

I use a Canon G9X, which is a reasonably inexpensive digital camera that has built-in wi-fi support. This eliminates the need for a trigger release, since I can use my phone to remotely control the camera.

As far as lightboxes, I used to use a lightbox, but found that it was a pain to set up and heavily constrained what I could photograph (eg no army shots). I ended up ditching the lightbox entirely, and instead just getting a big sheet of black paper to use as a backdrop, setting it on my work table and taping it to the wall.

What the lightbox gives you is more even lighting, but you can do that yourself just by using at least two good light sources. I use this setup, with the diffuser umbrellas being optional (they just prevent harsh shadows). I then set up my camera on a cheap tripod and fiddle with the exposure settings to get the right effect.

These photos were all taken with the setup I just described, so judge for yourself.
