So I've been pondering on which army to go for next. I'm currently collecting Tyranids and, whilst I love them, they aren't exactly very competitive. I'm not going super competitive but I'd like to field something that is both fun and can work well on the table.
I've been looking at a few options but I'm really stumped on what to pick. I've looked at Guard, Knights, Marines (specifically dark angels) and am also intrigued by what the new salamanders and reworked sisters of battle might be like.
I'd like something ranged but with a potential counter punch if needed and I love fliers (despite how good they may or may not be). Any suggestions?

A Mostly Renegades and Heretics blog.
GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH. |

Dark Eldar. Gunboats of Kabalite Warriors and Ravagers are nicely shooty, you can have backup melee with either wych cults or haemonculus covens, and their flyers are good.

Go Space Marines, they're a reasonably easy thing to paint up quickly, they look good. they have a TON of units. and they're both powerful and versitle thanks to their new codex.
They also have eneugh lore behind them that you can proably find a chapter that'll excite your imagination

If you consider jetbikes to be flyers, Custodes might be good for you. OK durability and you can ally almost any Imperial unit you like looks of to cover army deficiencies.

Sisters will drop soon. The beta dex was weak, but I have a pet theory that it was made weak as part of a calculated strategy to make the next dex seem even better.
I'm not gonna twist your arm to go sisters, but if you think they might be the ones, you'd be wise to wait for the drop, just in case it is everything we hope it will be.

I'd say go with an army that is a good foil to your Nids. That way if you can get a friend to play you have two opposite type factions to play vs each other. Always a good idea there.
So I'd say Marines, or you have some time to save up, Sisters of battle.
You're really not looking bad either way. Sisters my be rip wallet though, with the current prices the kits have been. So to save money, Marines are the choice I'd go with. Solid line, the costs aren't too over the top for most of it and it's a faction that gets regular support and growth as a promise and not a distant dream.

I think marines are not a bad shout. You could do a homebrew chapter and use any of the rules. The unit roster is huge! Plenty of fliers, to choose from especially if you go DA.
Going full DA will definitely give them more character but they will be sort of stuck into being DA.

Definitely Marines due to their new codex.
Wait until all first founding chapters have received their codex extension.

Guard are fun if you like tanks and guns. I like painting tactical marking signs on my tanks by company and squadron, so that's something I really like. Also baneblades.
Sisters of Battle are also really fun; since we're very aggressive in play style, and the models are cool even if they're in metal.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades! |

While not exactly the traditional "counter punch" you may be looking for, Farsight Enclaves is very different flavour of T'au.
While the Eight are not very competitive, Farsight has some neat tricks and running a T'au hybrid list will give you a very different style than Tyranid.

Go Daemons; you can have a single book with 4 play styles and branch out to Forgeworld if you want Daemon Engine stuff souped in. If you want speed, anvil, hammer or fire, you can’t go wrong.
