I went through the full article and really puts the whole story one step closer to possibly being solved. The most well-equipped expedition and newest ships at their disposal in nearly all of England's history and to disappear without a sole being found - only some notes from the Terror captain, Crozier.
The AMC series "The Terror" shows an unlikely culprit, but a good series, nonetheless.

Come on now. It was just a a soul-consuming monster that was given life during a war between Inuit gods before being banished to the frozen wasteland. Particularly fond of humans, the Tuunbaq can only be defeated by “spirit governors”, chosen Inuit shaman gifted with psychic abilities. The six shamans, who pay homage to the Tuunbaq by allowing it to eat their tongues (…), can maintain telepathic control over it through ritual singing and sacrifices of animal flesh.
Lets keep an open mind until all the facts are known.

One actual Eskimo report is particularly haunting to me. Its not their discovery of starvation point (shown in the story) but a report by one Eskimo who said he went onto one of the ships - Erebus I think.
The theory is that the ice had broken up and Erebus had started floating south, then refroze south. When the eskimo investigated there were still living crew members. He described them all as black (I am thinking frostbitten) and noncoherent. An officer comes out and makes the eskimo leave, telling him to stay away from another group on shore, warning them they are cannibals. Wo.

History Buffs on Youtube did an episode about it a bit back and went over a lot of the issues that would have plagued the expedition. Not to much on the book/show if one is looking for that, as it briefly touches n that but mostly goes over the actual event.
