I'll link PC Gamer's article on this:
PC Gamer wrote:Gearbox announces Homeworld 3 at PAX West
The new game will continue the story of the Hiigarans.
Earlier this month, Gearbox teased a special Homeworld announcement coming during its show at PAX West. Today that announcement was made, and it's one I've been waiting for: Homeworld 3 is happening.
Homeworld 3 is being developed by Blackbird Interactive, a studio headed by veterans of the original games whose previous project was the 2016 Homeworld prequel Deserts of Kharak. The new game is still very early in pre-production, and will be supported by a crowdfunding campaign on Fig with a goal of just $1—Gearbox said the point is to enable fans "to invest and participate in the success of the title," and also help set its priorities through a backers-only survey on features, priorities, and collector's edition contents.
Yep, you read it right, Homeworld is coming back (through crowdfunding).
And you also read that other thing right, the catch I mentioned: It's being published by Gearbox.
It's like giving a child a balloon, and then immediately popping it in his face.

It'll be a pity if Homeworld 3 releases on Epic exclusively. Already long since deleted all personally identifiable information from my epic store account and effectively closed it because of hte massive security holes in it that they simply refuse to fix. I hope it releases on Steam or GoG. Would love to play it. Adored the first three games, though the prequel was a bit eh. edited for clarity

I am sure you'll be able to get it in One Piece on other stores.

What a shame. I don't intend to pirate it either, I'll just not buy it.

My worries are:
1) Gearbox isn't well renowned for supporting franchises/titles other than Borderlands.
2) The studio that they are getting to make the game are clearly passionate, however their last game Deserts, whilst a solid title, lacked a greater appeal and didn't get a very long support window after release.
3) Crowd funding is a risk - even more of a risk when they aren't using Kickstarter and are using some kind of other company I've never heard of - which instantly lowers the potential market.
My worry is that it won't make enough funding or that Gearbox won't want to stump up the cash for it. That it could end up either aborted before its time or suffering with weaker featuers/issues and a small support window due to budget constraints.
Finally I hope they give the game a seriously good reason for the mothership. It worked great in Homeworld, but in HW2 it was just odd that they'd build this massive mothership which in all ways (save for its suddenly magicaly powered hyperdrive) was worse than the orbital platforms that they apparently had multiple versions of. They also built the Mothership in HW2 in a reaction to war and didn't put any good weapons on it. It doesn't have huge numbers of anti-fighter guns; it hasn't got any capital ship weapons, nor rockets nor ion cannon despite them having all the technologies for those weapons and also having no need to fill more than half the ship with colonists and survival gear (which is what the first homeworld ship had)
I really like the HW mechanics and ideas, but thus far the only really faithful and sensible game since hte first was Cataclysm which followed the lore faithfully as established in the first game and presented a new take on the "mothership" style approach. With a legitimate reason why they didn't have the tech to build megships straight out of the shipyard (it being basically a mining vessel with some light battle capabilities for defence that has to retro-fit itself for a sudden war with The Beast)
