Subject: Is converting an old O&G army to AOS worth it?

I finally pulled my greenskin army out of the closet after years of gathering dust. I mostly play X-wing these days and got it out to see if I could trade or sell any part of it. It's composed of lots of the night goblins from the old starter set, a few night goblin characters several boxes of orc boyz, orc archers, a box of black orcs, the black orc warboss box with a standard bearer, a couple spear chuckers, and some odds and ends. There several nice models, the last metal arrow boys, the torch wielding raiders (one with a pig under his arm) and Ruglud's crossbow orcs.
I had tons of fun converting and modeling and even though I usually lost, I always enjoyed playing. Now that I have them out and dusted off, I've half a mind to keep them if I can make viable armies for AOS I don't want to have to buy more than a few items to get them legal. I know the night goblins are back with more toadstools than ever. What about the lowly orc? I was making a sort of wandering raider whaaa! when i last used them. The black orcs and hard boyz in the middle with a unit of spears on one side and archers on the other. The gobos would hold a flank. The game or two I've seen at the LFGS seems to play much differently than it used to.
Anyway, if I can get them on the table without a ton of additions I may give AOS a whirl. Otherwise, I'll try to turn them into snubfighters from another galaxy.

Yeah, you could get a working army out of that.
Right now the Orks are split into two books, Bonespitterz & Ironjawz. Both of those list as "No longer available online" on GW though. But that's good news because it means they've likely got a new updated book coming real soon. (it's how it went with my Khorne stuff right as I was returning to AoS) And supposedly it combines the two ork factions.
So, as much as I hate giving this advice, I'd say wait a bit & keep an eye out for a new book before buying either of the old volumes or scrapping your boyz.
The night goblins though? They have their own current book. I assume you can ally them with orks, but don't quote me on that.
You'll need:
The rules,
maybe Generals Handbook 2019
Battle Tome(s)

That all makes sense. Thank you. The night goblin units are in better shape anyway.
I'll likely take them to the game store and see if I can get in a game with them borrowing a book to see how I like how AOS plays.

You could also check if there are any T9A or KoW players around your area.

I just started running the new version of night goblins in AOS recently.
they are now "The gloomspite Gitz" and have esentially been split into 4 subfactions. The Goblins themselves, The squig riding goblins, the spider riding goblins, and the Troggoths (trolls). Most Gloomspite armies do a "choose 2" thing. With the base goblins, and then 1 of the other groups. I am doing goblins, and squigs right now. So you could easily do Goblins and Spiders with no issue.
Although they have brand new plastic sculpts for most of the range. You should have no problem converting any of the old stuff them over to AOS. Honestly just rebasing to round bases should be fine. and that apparently isn't strictly required.
As for the orcs. Hold them to the side for now, as a new battletome for the combined Ironjaws and Bonesplitters was announced a month or two ago. So will be out before the end of the year most likely.

Orruks Battletome was said at the Nova to be "too close for them to spoil details of at that event".
The new Bonereapers faction is going to dominate October whilst November is Sisters of Battle; so there is very likelyhood that he Orruks Battletome will appear in September or early October.
Otherwise the details are noted above and if you love the goblins the Gloomspite Gitz is one of the best books GW has produced for AoS; having both generally good balance with other factions, but also good internal balance which gives you a good wealth of choices.

Yeah, don't rebase anything yet until you find out how things are done where ever you'll be playing.
For ex; In the circles I play with it's not at all important to us what shape/size your bases are for AoS - as long as it's whatever size came with the model initially or is at least reasonable.
Nor do we bother treating old/smaller/square/etc bases as whatever the new round sizes are for measuring etc purposes. 5-7mm difference? It's just not worth the effort. So we just measure from the bases as is. WYSIWYG.
