Maybe someone can shed some light on what's the latest on the Tau's stance on religious practices among their subject races. Is it allowed? Is it suppressed? Is there a dividing line between benign superstition and destructive creed that determines what goes and what's a no go?

Would be especially good to hear about Black Library's offerings in this regard as I don't think I've read anything from them in a decade. I don't recall the latest codex saying anything on the matter, but it's been a while so if anyone can set me straight here, too, it'll be appreciated.

The reason I ask is that it's common knowledge you can't flip a light switch without praising the Omnissiah if you expect the light to come on. Certainly the Tau wouldn't want their human helpers to live in the dark, would they?

But more seriously, I keep coming back to the idea of tying together the background for my Tau and a couple of human forces and it would be good to know what the official stance is at the moment.

The Greater Evil has some snippets about the gue'vesa auxiliaries - but I don't remember any mention of the religious side.

I have just read it: it such a great story ! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
On another note, IIRC, in the old fluff, humans could still worship the Emperor, but stripped of all its xenophobia etc

As long as it doesnt conflict with the greater Good the Tau allow there friends to do whatever they want. There are plenty of Geuvesa who still worship the emperor

Haven't read Greater Evil yet, but in older background, it had been mentioned that humans could continue worshiping their god.

The 4th sphere expansion may have put paid to that though - at least amongst the Tau on said expedition, who were very uneasy about the warp entity that may have saved them all, that may have formed from the worship of the other species in that fleet.

I'd love to know how they justified that TBH. "we left the imperium he built and are actively serving the enemy, but we still worship him!"

Ultimately the power of an Inquisitor extends as far as he can make it extend

The same way others in the past have justified rebelling against the Imperium, or how medieval Europeans justified fighting against the Pope.

"The ones in power are corrupt and are not carrying out true divine will."

In the Tau Gue'vesa the concept of separation of church and state could arise once more.

It isn't like we had multiple popes that excommunicated each other.
Or a casual 30+ year war more devastating then WW1 and WW2 relatively to scale. For one Region.

So, there's been no noteworthy expansion on that in the meantime? Cool, thanks all!

I thought I remembered something about being allowed to worship in the old background, but it must be fifteen years since I read it. Best to check to stay up to date, but I guess it shouldn't be surprising if the Tau's allies don't get half as much mention as battlesuits after the latter took over the empire's identity so much. Bit of a shame. I always liked the alien coalition aspect and would have loved to see it expanded. Maybe one day.

From what I've heard, I think War of Secrets might expand on it - but I haven't read it yet.

Yep, War of Secrets covers that 4th sphere thing, and one of the main characters in it is a human priest of the greater good. It's a bit of an ambitious tale and could be better, but it covers some interesting ideas.

I too think it's a bit of a shame the alien coaltion thing hasn't been as much a focus as the ceramic technology side - harder to sell a wargame on, perhaps, but it's not like BL doesn't put out the occasional novel focusing on something other than war, so one about the politics of the Tau'va could be fun.
