Quick question:

I was trying to understand the best way to run (old) seer council in 8th.

With the rule of three, would it be better to run 3 detachments so there were 3 Farseers and 3 Conclaves (1 for each)?

Hey there! Just a heads up that this forum is for questions about how the rules work. In the future you should ask this kind of question here:

Due to the rule of 1 for Psychic powers, you'd be best off running 1 Conclave and 1-2 Farseers. I'd recommend trying 3 Warlocks hiding them behind terrain if possible or running 10 inside a Wave Serpent and casting defensive powers on the Wave Serpent. Alternatively, you can do a Skyrunner Conclave, it'd pretty much be the same thing, either maximum, use psychic powers and Stratagems to keep them alive or minimum and try to hide them and use their mobility to stay out of trouble. As far as Farseers go I don't think you can really go wrong, the Footseer, Skyseer and Eldrad are good options, Footseer is probably a bad option if you go with a Sky Conclave. As far as Craftworld goes you'll have to go Ulthwe if you want Eldrad, but it's not a bad option by itself. Iyanden and Alaitoc seem like bad choices bad, Saim-Hann would be an option if you wanted to deepstrike in your Warlock Conclave but I think I like Alaitoc the best. Between Alaitoc and Lightning Fast Reflexes you'll have a unit that doesn't just dissappear in a poof of smoke when your opponent looks at it, add Conceal on top of that and you've got a unit that won't be shot off the board by anything but auto-hit weapons. Quicken or Jinx would be my second power, if you add in a regular Warlock with Jinx then I think Quicken is a fun idea, that keeps your Jinx Warlock safe and allows the Conclave to go out and do cool stuff. AFAIK Warlock Conclaves are just a fun choice ATM so that's probably the kind of game I'd look to test this tactic in, although you can get some leeway with a fun choice if you make the rest of your army really competitive.

Can you run 3 foot seers and 3 skyseers? Or is three the max number of farseers total?

They are 2 different datasheets so you can have 3 of each.

If you are adamant to running a council I would sugest running single warlocks as it will give them protection due to character targeting rules which conclave lacks (meaning the conclave will either have to wait in the webway, have a WS or hide behind LOS which might impact its psychic output.

You could have a couple farseers and 3 warlocks for a 5 man council blob to give small seer council with many psychic powers to utilise.. If you are running wave serpents I could see the conclave being used along side those for fun.

Sadly the conclave is very expansive (point wise) for what it offers.

The best use for a conclave I have found is a unit of 2 models on foot. They can use the stratagem to double the range of their powers, so I run protect/jinx, and quicken/restrain for battlefield control.

I start them in a transport, then move them to a nice little hidden spot within 36" of the jinx target. Then I cast jinx without the enemy having a chance to deny the witch (using the strat).

it's 90 points... it doesn't have the character keyword, but I run alaitoc so they're -1 to hit, and usually hidden in ruins out of LOS, and an undeniable jinx can be game winning.

I tend to run up my warlocks along side of seer for at leats a turn or two. I find always need a farseer nearby for the seer council strat. The +1 to cast is just a must have for doom/ other powers.

if I had a £1 for every time I failed a cast even with runes I'd have a new scorpion by now lol...

If you're just worried about survivability you should look into a spriritseer. He does everything a warlock does but has 4 wounds instead of the 2 that a warlock has. He's only 10 points more. He also can use a normal smite.

But he does not give seer council Strat...and 60% of the time he will be jinxing and not smiting especially if yo get a +1 for casting... Don't get me wrong I run spirit seers as well to go with my wraiths.

This is a bit controversial but I also rate bone singers. A WS with some wraiths a spirit seer and a bone singer is pretty fun. The singer can either rep a wraith/ wave serpent or cast full powered smite.
There is something satisfying seeing you opponents face drop when your half dead WS that's sitting on an objective with a -2 to hit regains wounds

There was a pretty awesome tournament list a while back that runs a warlock skyrunner conclave death star. I think it was something like 900 points all invested into a single unit of warlock skyrunners. You basically run a max unit of skyrunners, buff it to hell with every warlock/farseer power, put some farseers/autarchs in the middle for runes of fate/negate overwatch, then fly around 16" every turn being unkillable (30w, -2 or -3 to hit, T4/2+/3++/5+++) while unloading a ridiculous amount of damage every turn in every phase. There may be additional ways to optimize using craftworld traits or craftworld-specific strats that I haven't looked into yet.

The list obviously relies a ton on getting your spells off but it seems like a lot of fun to play. And it'd be extremely powerful, probably strong enough to win a local GT or two, especially since it's not very meta. I'd run it myself if I had more warlock skyrunners.

It does look cool on paper! I'm planning a foot Conclave list for fun (because yeah.. I don't really want to spend all that £££ on sky runner kits..or attempt shoddy conversions)

More accurate imo.

I would wait until release of new plastic Warlocks or something like that. Since new models usually means new op rules. Until then best way to run Warlocks is on little miniature treadmills on a shelf, or as 2 man unit to push Jinx out of Deny range.
