I have heard people say that they use metallic permanent markers to paint in the rivets, what colors do people use?

I shade around the rivets then dab the tops with a metallic paint

rivets on what? context is needed here as rivets vary in size from those on infantry equipment to those holding tanks together.

I have heard about people using them on everything from space marines to knights and tanks. I would be using them on space marines MK 3 armor.

It is likely the case that a metallic marker is more “fine” tipped than a brush. So you could paint your mini, put a dark wash around the rivet studs, and then dot the tops with a metallic pen / marker to avoid paint “spilling” down the sides of the rivet.
