Crazed Spirit of the Defiler

Hi, I've only been into 40k for 18 months but remember looking at the classic designs back when i was a kid in the 90s!
I always loved the look of the landraider with the exposed tracks all round. I feel really nostalgic towards the style of the old one and would like to run one instead of the current model. Does anyone have comparison photos of the current land raider alongside the old rogue trader land raider? Am i right in saying there's only ever been two different kits by GW?
Is the Forgeworld Proteus the same size as the old style model?
I can't decide whether to keep a look out on ebay for a vintage model coming up or stump for the FW Proteus. Probably end up paying similar price
Am i likely to get stung for a cheap recast of the old one buying on ebay?
Anything else i should be aware of?
Thanks!

Pfft. Not even close. Not counting shipping you'll probably be able to afford 3-6 used RT era Raiders for the price of 1 FW Proteus. Unless you're finding well painted ones/commission work. Or one that's still on sprue/in box - those get expensive.
Many vintage Raiders might also be missing bitz. Or need repairs. (mostly the pintel mount HB. Probably the comms areal as well. Spindly little things that tended to snap off during transport/storage & then get lost in the bitz box. Sometimes the hedge-cutter)
I wouldn't even bid on one that doesn't have both side guns unless I'm making burned out wreck terrain.

Not likely. Especially if you start with the poorly painted/in need of repair listings.

I've found the classic Raiders are usually less than 100$ US if they're in need of some tender love and care. It's a great project though. The above Raider had a missing door and some warping damage, and I pulled it apart, flexed things back into place, replaced the doors, and added some extra mods to bring it up to snuff.

Looks awesome. Great paint job too they both look amazing in white
That's something. I keep seeing some with what looks like two sections of tread on the front. Why are they like that? Is it covering a hole or something?!?

^Haha, I don't really know. I think there's some historical precedent to A:carrying extra treads for repair. And B: using them as extra armor maybe? It's the way the studio built theirs, so that's what gets done, I think.

While we're don't do it now because it's no longer effective against modern anti-tank weaponry (and we frequently have rubber road blocks, etc.) the idea was two-fold as mentioned above: bonus tracks for repairs, and an extra thickness of "armour" to help prevent penetration.

It is a convenient way (when modeled) to cover holes or damage, etc.

Yeah, the extra track links hail from WWII. Crews would often carry extra lenths of track in case of field repairs.
And as it's another layer of steel.... Well, they'd often mount it on vulnerable areas of the tank (in addition to where ever it'd fit). Couldn't hurt, might help.
