I wouldn't say Venomcrawlers are that much better better, they're simply preferred by some players.
The additional wounds on the Defiler / ability to take big guns usually doesn't make a difference. Mostly they're used them to run across the board and smash stuff up, either your opponent shoots them up with high D weapons or they don't. That favors a smaller unit that can move farther per turn.
Both units have about the same number of attacks that, on average, cause about the same number of wounds. I like the
VC a little better because the claws do a flat 3 damage instead of
d6, but that's just a personal preference.
The real difference between the two is the Defiler is better against high T targets, the
VC is better geared towards Infantry. That's it. If you think you are going to face more boots on the ground, you might be better saving a few points.
