I'm thinking about starting AoS and have a basic question about point costs. If a unit has a min of 3 and a max of 12 but the cost is a straight number X is the cost the same regardless of how many members the unit has or is the cost X * however many min models you use? For example if I had 6 members would the cost be X or 2X? What do you do about odd numbers like if I wanted to have 8 models in the unit what would be the cost then?

Thanks for your input.

For AoS units are bought in blocks.

So if a unit has 3 models at 20 points and a maximum of 12 models it would be

3 - 20points
6 - 40 points
9 - 60 points
12 - 80 points

You can't do fractions of a formation, so it would always be (for that unit) a multiple of 3.

Now some units have a point value of X/Y. In that case the X is the cost per unit block, whilst the Y cost is for the full unit. This typically is a discounted value, thus encouraging you to take a full unit.

So in our above example it could be:
3 units at 20/70 maximum 12

12 units would be 70 rather than 80 points.

Note some of the starter deals (most things like the Stormcast game box) can come iwth abnormal numbers of models. Within those boxed sets there are typically special rules for fielding them within a boxed set game. Otherwise outside of that game you'd be back to the normal point values. That said even if the numbers can sometimes be a bit odd, the discounts are often more than worth it for the abnormal numberings.

Thanks. One of the units that made me wonder is Dryads. The unit is 10/30 but you can only buy them in boxes of 16.

Yeah some of this is because the boxes were made long ago for the Old World system. However you could easily use the spare from the it to make Branchwraithes as there's quite a few extra general bits in the kit. Eg one of the back segments has a familiar sitting in the tree part so you could easily use that to denote a special Branchwraith instead of using he finecast model currently on sale.

In addition to the previous post, if you buy two boxes you will have 32 models. If you make 3 of them as Branch Nymphs then you have the option of running the unit as one 30 model unit with 1 Branch Nymph, or as three 10 model units using all 3 Branch Nymphs.

It's nice to be able to be WYSIWYG

I read that somewhere else but thanks for reminding me.
