I haven't played or kept up for the last several months due to not having time over the summer. I just saw on GW's website that there is a 2nd Space Marine Codex and no sign of the 1st one anymore.

Is the 2nd an additional Codex with extras or is it a complete replacement for the original 8E SM Codex?

Complete replacement, there's entire overhauls to the chapter tactics, faction rules as well as to certain datasheets in the previous one. The old one is obsolete as of now.

Be aware, they’ve broken the codex out a bit further with the rerelease. The ne SM codex contains the rules and datasheets that are shared for “codex-compliant chapters” (namely, NOT Dark Angels, Space Wolves and Blood Angels).

Named characters and specific codex rules (such as for Ultramarines) have been moved to a supplemental codex that covers that specific chapter.

So, if for example, you want to include Guilliman, you need the base SM codex AND the UM codex.

It never ends well

Thank you, that's helpful.

Well, the first founding chapters get their own supplementary book.
The new SM codex is mandatory and the corresponding cards.
Then if you want to play on of the founding chapters such as UM or WS, you need the supplementary book plus the associated cards.
This is about 100 bucks in total. Happy hunting!

Or just want optimal power for the models you use. If you want to be using different type of units(vehicle heavy army, infantry heavy army, fast assault army etc) you need to get multiple supplements...Fun fun fun.
