So.

As far as I can tell he's in the Index, and the old Codex.
But not in the new Codex.

So the designers flowchart says I can take things in the index, but I should use the version in the Codex.
Excep it's a now outdated Codex.

So do I use the Index, Old Codex, or none at all?

You can still use index units, if they arent in the new codex. The last page of the BRB FAQ still applies.

Chapter Champion is now Ultramarines only - he's in the Ultramarines Supplement.

This. All the Chapter Exclusive units have been moved to their respective supplements.

In the supplement, but not in the Index (assuming it wasn't chapter specific in the index, don't have it handy. If they can take it in the index, they still can, but they no longer have a codex datasheet, and thus use the index datasheet.

Your model no longer has a datasheet in a codex.

GW calls those additional books codex supplements.

If the datasheet in the Index is a <CHAPTER> Chapter Champion instead of an ULTRAMARINES Chapter Champion it may not be the same datasheet.

The name of the datasheet is the same, Company Champion. Per the FAQ, the new one must be used, which makes it Ultramarines only.

Well...

That seems beyond stupid.

But makes sense according to the GW rules. Thanks for clarifying guys. I strangely didn't think to look in the Ultramarines book for a unit which previously had not been and has no reason to be ultramarines exclusive.

Indeed, you must use the most recent rules for your model. That being said, you can use the index to represent non-ultramarines Company Champions because those are the latest rules for non-ultramarines company champions.

Probably because the only 'official' Chapter Champion model is part of the Ultramarines Honour Guard set.

You can still use the index for non-Ultramarines Company Champions. Otherwise Space Wolves couldn't use Rhinos. The Name of a datasheet doesn't mean anything, it's the datasheet itself that means something. The Company Champion in the index is the latest rules for a non-ultramarines Company Champion, so those rules are legal (for now).

Chapter Champion. And yes. There isn't a Chapter Champion in Codex Space Marines, nor in Codex Supplement White Scars so the White Scars Chapter Champion model does not have a Chapter Champion Datasheet newer than the Index.

The very first question is Does Your Model Have a Datasheet in a Codex. Your Model is a White Scars (or whatever non-UM <Chapter> ) Chapter Champion. Next edition, I'm betting your White Scars Chapter Champion model becomes a White Scars REALLY cool melee Veteran Sergeant, but what can you do?

Q. Some datasheets that were in the 2017 edition of Codex:
Space Marines are not in the 2019 edition, but are still
in Index: Imperium 1. Can the versions from Index:
Imperium 1 still be used?
A: Yes, provided an updated datasheet is not found for
them elsewhere (e.g. in a codex supplement).
