Sorry. Quick question. Do you need to thin out washes/shades like you do base and layer paints?
Am adding Agrax Earthshade for the first time and wondered how to apply. Straight out of pot or from palette/thinned out?
Thanks.

Depends on how dark you want it to be really. You can water it down. If you're painting it neatly into just the recesses then you may find it's fine undiluted, but if you're slapping it all over it may be a bit too dark.

Watering it down will make it "wetter" and splotchier but it's easier to sink it down into recesses (like panel lines) with a thin brush. Thinning it with medium will make it want to sit on larger panels (which I do with contrast paints now like the gray).

I regularly add just a bit of water to my wash (in a separate mix palette cup) just to lessen the effect of dulling the paint, but still keep it recessing and darkening the low areas. Yes, as the others have said, too much water ruins its coverage properties entirely.

Be wary of water in washes (particularly the matter ones like Agrax), it can lead to blooming (white marks appearing) as the matting agent doesn't get carried so well in water.
You generally don't need to thin it at all, but if you want to drop opacity a little glaze medium (lahmian or Vallejo) works well. Contrast medium is even better if you want to sharpen lines as it gathers into recesses very neatly.
