Hi all. Recently bought Dark Imperium after a 20+ year holiday from the hobby.....and while I am LOVING painting the models(DG done, waiting for blue spray to arrive for Marines).....I am going to be playing exclusively with my wife in a very low key game setting.
I am wondering...given the more complex nature of 40k itself...would I be better in my situation picking up Kill Team or Warcry? I just dont think I ave the time available to learn full on 40k and I think it might be too much of a leap for the wife?
With that in mind, could I ask-
1- Killteam, its like mini 40k yes? A skirmish game where you can play single fights or a campaign. It is much easier to pick up n play vs 40k? Is the game time much shorter?
2- Not the fight forum, but is Warcry basically to AOS what KT is to 40k? Is warcry a smaller version, easier to pick up and play in a shorter time frame per game?
3- With that in mind..what would be best for me do you think(and the wife) KT/Warcry? Is one easier, is one a better game etc?
4- KT, main box is SM and Tau yes? Any other starter boxes around or likely to be around for xmas?
Thanks for any info, really enjoying being back in touch with GW and 40k etc...just think full on 40k will be too much to swallow for very low key games between us. Not regrettig buying DI though, loving painting!!!

1) Kill Team is a mini 40k, but uses many of the same rules so there's a lot to learn. Games are quick.
2) Kind of, but Warcry is less complex and plays quicker.
3) Warcry is the better "out of the box" game.
4) They'll be more faction boxes out (and possibly terrain ones) but not another starter. As you've already got Dark Imperium you could just pick up the rulebook (and proxy some terrain).

Warcry would probably be a good shout. Not played it myself but looks to have very straight-forward rules.

Warcry works really simply pretty much straight out of the box (once you've built+painted things).
The rules themselves are simple and the game is built around a short number of turns and alternating actions to provide a fast and dynamic game with only a handful of models each.
You can play it out of the box with the warbands and chaos monsters, but you can also expand it with a range of factions from AoS (not all are currently supported but its expected all will be given time). The mercenaries book that just came out adds new models to the existing forces and also adds epic battles against larger monsters as well.
The game out of the box also comes with setup cards. Basically you pick a card to choose how the terrain is setup then a second card for how you deploy onto the table. Then there's twist cards which could be anything from a positive or negative modifier to both sides through to adding roaming monsters to the battlefield. This means that game setup is REALLY quick as almost everything is done for you.
The terrain boxes that they've released also all come with boards and terrain and terrain cards as well (some of which expand on the core set terrain by adding it in).
If you want you can get the rulebook, the game cards and one of the terrain boxes and then pick any one of the warbands you want (or the other supported races) and get to playing. So you don't "have" to get the core box if you don't want.
For an out of the box game with a lot of nice room to expand and some neat campaign systems with a casual air to it Warcry is a really great product.

I don't know if Warcry minis can be used in AoS, but I know for sure all KT models are usable in 40k. This allows you to play KT until everything is painted, and then you can figure out if you want to step up to 40k.
Remember also that core 40k rules are free; they are super lean- no missions or anything, but technically, they're there.
KT can be played stand alone or campaign style.
If you don't like the minis in the KT box, you could just get the books and then each player can just buy a box of whichever minis they want.
If you get the admech Kill Team, it comes with a model who is not available anywhere else, plus a bit of scenery; 40k rules for all the minis will also be in the box.

They can, the website for GW has the rules for them under their rules download tab on the store page. All of the new Warbands go into the Slaves to Darkness army. The only issue at present is that Slaves to Darkness has no batteltome what so ever (though they've some rules in the 2019 Generals Handbook). It's one of the last armies without any updates so far, but its very certain to get updated rules in 2020 (likely in the first quarter or so I would estimate)
