Hello, fellow Dakkaists!
I need your help with opinions and suggestions!
I'm planning on starting a new ork army soon-ish. And what I'm currently missing is a theme for my army. I am very much into kitbashing and a bit less into painting so I'm looking for something creative on the building side but maybe not as much on the painting one. And also it has to grounded in the setting at least somehow. Orks allow for a lot of creativity but I don't want to do something real wolrd themed that would not be feasible in warhammer universe.
My current fall back plan is to do a war boyz from fury road themed army with white paint over green skin, lost of rust and a generous silvering of teeth. But my problem with that plan is that a lot of people have already done that and I'll be missing the special snowflake feel that I crave (as you can see from my previous posts =D). My plan B is the good old Freebotaz since there's just so much bits available, but again, I wanna do a lot of kitbashing, scratchbuilding and some sculpting, so maybe that's not all that good even.

How about an Angelis-themed army – that is, the orks from the Gorkamorka setting? It'd be an opportunity to use a lot of the ideas you've produce for your Fury Road theme, but with a more distinctive and in-universe feel.

In terms of differentiation, you could bring in some Diggas (as runts, obviously – no proppa ork would stand for oomies in boyz mobs, no matter how enthusiastically they paint themselves green), include lots of looted Necron tech, and get a 'football derby' feel by visually distinguishing Gorker mobz from Morker mobz.

What models are you most interested in building/painting? What units do you envision as the showcase of your army?

When I started I had access to quite a bit of third-hand Imperial Guard vehicles and kit, so a heavily looted/converted Deathskulls force appealed to me

How about a "hillbilly" ork theme? I know that Kromlech probably has appropriate heads, with hats or beards (or both). It would be kind of a Snakebite/Mad Max mix. Loads of squigs and primitive weapons, plus you could add any 'redneck' things you thought appropriate (moonshine jugs, jugbands, Dukes of Hazzard, Hatfields & McCoys, whatever).

My other idea would be to hearken back to the Rogue Trader era, and do a Madboyz army. Pick a madness for each unit, and figure out a way to model that insanity for those orks. This theme would be less visually tied together (as each unit would have its own theme), but give you a lot of room for converting and modeling, and definitely tie into the background. Just make sure to take a Weirdboy as your Boss, for all the Madboyz to follow!

How about Orks that simply aren't silly/goofy? Oh and not bright emerald green. I'd love to see a properly dark take on Orks, with a different skin tone (pale or white, or ruddy-red/brown). Orks that would actually be terrifying if they invaded a planet rather than comic relief like a bad 80's cartoon?

How important is being competitive to you? I haven’t played against Orks in a long while, but I understand they have limited options when it comes to not-gettin-stomped-like-a-runt .

Some of these are a pure joy to read =D Thanks to everyone for your suggestions thus far.
Da Butcha's Hillbilly theme sounds like it could tottaly work, although I' haven't not decided yet =)

As far as units go, this army is gonna be started out in a Path to glory styled campaign, so it'll be entirely up to the dice gods.

I started an Ork kill team years ago and I sadly lost the models in a box somewhere. They were the Navy SEALS or SAS of the orks, the most elite of the elite who were so impressed with humie stormtroopers and Marines that they adopted the style of suppressed shootas, personal radios, lightweight body armor, night vision goggles, etc.

I wish I had the pics because like everything else Orks do, they sorta try hard but their base Orkiness ends up compromising everything. They have no idea how a suppressor, night vision goggles or personal radios work.

I started gluing tubing to the ends of their shootas so that from the side it looks like a suppressor but from the front it's literally just tubing that does nothing to suppress shoota rounds. I cut up small rod and glued them side by side then glued that to their helmets to look like NVGs but they don't understand light amplification, they would just be red goggles the Orks jam over their eyes to look elite. Their radios, instead of being personal comms linked to a Boss, were just radios that made noise and gave away their positions. I used IG stubbers from vehicles to make bolt action sniper rifles that counted as rokkit launchers

The result was a bunch of elite Orks who might've been BS3 or 4 but jammed red lights over their eyes and ended up being BS2 as normal. Their suppressors and radios gave away their positions, their lightweight body armor did less than regular thick Ork armor. An otherwise elite fighting force ended up being no better than regular Orks but I enjoyed making them look like something out of Zero Dark Thirty.

Dunno if that interests you.

I have a vague plan for a KT of 'Prime-Orkies'.

Primaris Mahreens with Ork heads and Shootas, basically.
