After playing a fantastic game of Space Hulk with my girlfriend last weekend I was well and truly bitten by the retro Oldhammer bug (again)!

The sheer pleasure of moving those bulky Space Marine Terminators down tight, claustrophobic corridors simply reinvigorated my love for all things 1980s and I just needed more!

I looked at those beautiful Terminators pictured on the side of the box and the large painting on the game’s main cover and I knew that I had to paint up some more of my own astartes warriors clad in mighty suits of Tactical Dreadnought Armour!

Now as most of you will know my main Rogue Trader Space Marine Force is a full Company of Salamanders that I have been working on for over a decade.

However this time I fancied something different and decided to go for the iconic red clad Blood Angels.

With this in mind I set about producing the first test model pictured above (complete with Goblin Green Base and original chapter decal from 1989)...

My colour scheme and overall theme was inspired by the Blood Angel Terminator that is pictured on the cover of this 1992 Citadel Painting Guide.

I remember that I loved absolutely loved this picture when I was growing up and I literally spent hours staring at it wishing that I could achieve a similar looking model!

I’m really happy with how my test model has turned out... so I guess I’m going to have to do a whole squad now!!!

Wow, beautiful job on an absolutely classic model. You know, I think that may have been the GW mini (and picture) that got me into 40k nearly 30 years ago...

Great to see it reproduced so well.

Cheers Mate! It was always a favourite picture... that and a similar image of a Deathwing Terminator in white (not bone) armour painted in a similar style!

Models were cruder then, but I honestly believe they had a lot more charm and character. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there was something that really captured my imagination back then. Maybe it’s because I was younger and the hobby was so new to me!!

Yeah, as you say, it was a combination of the novelty of 40k back then, plus the unique looking minis and the immediately captivating background. When you are used to Airfix and Tamiya kits, things like this terminator were amazing.

hehe, nice! I still have unpainted metal terminators from those times.. Absolutely love the captain and librarian models, they have aged surprisingly well (scale creep notwithstanding).

You painted the chest wings white though? Arent they supposed to be black?

In hindsight, a goblin green base on a 40K mini feels wrong : not exactly "grimdark" is it

Good job.

Remember those pics of the cover like it was yesterday.

Cheers guys! Yeah I didn’t think the Black chest eagle stood out enough so I went for a cream instead.

Apparently they used to give all models Goblin Green bases for some sort of photo editing reason (pre-digital)... it gave them a consistent colour to compare and adapt all images to. This could just be a rumour though!!

I love these models, brings back many happy memories. I notice your shade of red (at least on my monitor) looks less 'cream of tomato soup' orangey-red than the classic BAs - was that intentional? As a kid I always found it confusing that the Blood Angels were not the colour of blood, but more of an orange...

What always got me about that GW termie pic is the MASSIVE paint chip on the power fist. I've no idea how that got to print, but I just can't unsee it.

Nice paintjob, OP, though!

There's no school like the old school.

Those Terminators still have a fond place in my heart.
