Have I got it completely wrong or can you mix for example Blood Angels and Cadians, so long as you put them in separate detachments?

Yes, they are both IMPERIUM.
Your army may share that factions keyword. But within the detachments themselves you may not use IMPERIUM faction keyword as a unifying keyword.

So yes, you are correct, and on the right track .

As an aside, as "infinite" rolls is actually impossible even if the FAQ "allows" it, then it will always be a non-zero chance to pass them all. Eventually the two players will die. If they pass the game on to their decendents, they too will eventually die. And, at the end of it all, the universe will experience heat death and it, too, will die. In the instance of "infinite" hits, we're talking more of functional infinity, rather than literal.

RAW you can't pass the game onto descendants, permissive ruleset. Unless we get an FAQ from GW.

That is correct. In Matched Play, all your detachments must have 1 faction keyword in common, such as Imperium. However, all units in a detachment must have 1 faction keyword in common excluding Imperium (and a few others). Thus a Blood Angels detachment and a Cadian detachment are a legal Matched Play battle-forged army.

Just keep in mind that with the new SM codexes you will lose both Combat Doctrines and the Combat Doctrine Extension if you mix factions like this.

At the moment Blood Angels loose nothing for doing so, but this will probably change in the future.

Even if I have them in different detachments? I thought I would keep combat doctrines (for both IG and SM) and CTs and everything as long as I keep them separated

From page 72 of the Ultramarines supplement (emphasis added):

If your army is Battle-forged, then in addition to the Detachment abilities gained from Codex: Space Marines, units in your army with the Combat Doctrines ability (see Codex: Space Marines) gain the Scions of Guilliman ability so long as, with the exception of UNALIGNED units, every unit from your army is an ULTRAMARINES unit or every unit from your army is from the same Ultramarines successor Chapter...

To help you avoid a little confusion, you still benefit from Chapter Tactics and Regimental Doctrines. You still gain access to the appropriate Stratagems.

However, if your Chapter was from Codex Space Marines (as opposed to Codex Blood Angels), you would not benefit from Combat Doctrines or the additional bonus to Combat Doctrines gained from any of the Codex Space Marine Supplements. This has no bearing on Blood Angels at this time.

Aaah, so as soon as the non-codex chapters get these updates It´ll e the same again...

I haven´t read enough about the combat doctrines to use them properly anyway. Thanks!
