I was recently able to snag the discontinued Forge World dreadnought for the Dark Angels (always wanted one those models). So I've decided to make a Chaos Space Marine army based on the Fallen. At the same time I've thought of a narrative for my warband and just wanted to bounce my ideas around. See if they're as interesting as I think they are.

My two favorite gothic aesthetics would have to be Warhammer 40k and Bloodborne, so I wanted to combine the two somehow. With that in mind I remembered that the knights of Caliban were once beast hunters. With that in mind, perhaps pieces of Caliban survived being swallowed by the warp. Occasionally, pieces of the old world are expelled from warp space and crash down upon unsuspecting planets. The shards will begin twisting the local fauna into warp beasts, like those that were once found on old Caliban.

My band of Fallen have made it their purpose in life to either retrieve or quarantine the remains of Caliban. More importantly, they hunt down and slay or capture the warp beasts produced by the warp charged stones. Of course, they don't do this out of the goodness of their hearts. I'm toying around with two ideas. They hunt the beasts to fulfill some empty sense of purpose, pretending they're still Knights of Caliban. another idea is that they collect these remnants for power or some attempt to recreate some twisted form of their old home. Whatever seems like a more bleak, Lovecraftian horror.

Maybe if I wanted to add some possessed later, perhaps the Fallen warband itself are being twisted into beasts. Add more of that bloodborne flavor.

If you have any thoughts I would be happy to hear them.

Just keep in mind that your army must be on the run because WHOLE CHAPTER wants you dead. So everyone need to be at least veteran because running away for years is not easy. I hope i helped!

Also no heavy units unless they have teleportation! Imagine running away in dreadnought or super heavy tank.

But the DA dreadnoughts are sexy! Look at it!

It has candles on it! And chains!

But I do agree. I won't have any vehicles beyond dreadnoughts. If it doesn't have legs, it's not mobile enough.

Game play wise, I will suffer. I'm basically running Fallen, terminators, dreadnoughts, sorcerers and cypher. All good veteran choices.

You can always have some bikes and jump packs to have some advantage. I mean fast attack used correctly can screw up entire army so the rest of the fallen can finish them
Btw. That dreadnought looks fantastic! and less chaos so your guys have some character and are not next generics heretics. Warcrime and heresy are two separate things!
Also consider one or two gunships they can come in handy and are really lore friendly.

Speaking of dreadnoughts. I think of buying know no fear but i also saw etb redemptor which is cheaper and its not gonna hurt wallet that much . Is dread worth it? Is it atleast taller? Or should i stay with KNF?

Using repainted AoS Skullcrushers could fit well with the beast-hunter idea. Also, your idea of them trying to build a twisted version of Caliban very much reminds me of Mortarion shaping the Plague Planet into a (more) evil version of Barbarus.

If you want to be unique/troll, exploit the dark angels conspiracy theory:
The Dark Angels went traitor during the Heresy. This is why they changed their armor color (like all the other traitor legions, loyalists did not). When they found out that Horus lost, they pretended to have been loyal (oops!). The Fallen are the Dark Angels who actually remained loyal to the Emperor and are now viciously hunted to prevent the Dark Angels big secret (that they were traitors) from getting out. This is why the "Fallen" often appear to serve the Imperium's needs, rather than Chaos.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

I wouldn't go that far, but I think they're certainly more interesting as a neutral entity, rather than pure evil. They just didn't pick a side and that damned them in the eyes of the puritanical Imperium. It pushes the Dark Angel's motivations from noble into shame and embarrassment. They just can't stand someone tarnishing their pride.
