So after a 25 year break, I asked people what box to get, bought Dark Imperium and painted it all up, really enjoyed it.

I have since come to some conclusions on what I want to do and wondered at some points:

1- I am looking at making a table at home which looks similar to this one(link after). Does anyone know the building manufacturer/what ruins they are? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OiipZOeOHk&t=2856s Also is there other good manufacturers of similar ruins?

2- I will initially look to play smaller games, so will use something like a 3x3 mat at first. What size point force would you suggest for a 3x3 table (they are friendly at home games). I will expand the table/forces down the line.

3- I will want to play Imperial vs another faction. For the Imperials can I use the Marines from DI and then add some Imperial Guard too to make a combined force?

4- As I will play Imperial vs another faction....I am not going to play Death Guard. Do I stick the painted DG from the DI box on Ebay?

5- I am looking at my 2nd force to be possibly Eldar or Tyranids. If it is Tyranids I will buy the Xmas box. If it is Eldar, given the 3x3 table, what do you recommend I buy. Start Collecting isnt big enough and no Xmas box for eldar. The older larger boxes such as the Apoc box is sold out? How do I buy a force

6- For Tyranids or Eldar, do I need to buy the Codex for them really?(bare in mind smaller at home battles).

7- In the Bat rep above, they have objective cards. Do I need to buy these separately(they didnt come in the DI box)?

8- Would I be better getting into Apocalype instead? Heard its better or is it too expensive for one person buying 2 armies?
Thanks for any info folks.

My DI box below, really enjoyed painting up 40k after so long!!!!

Ummm... I would not sell those DG. Keep them, display them, play them in small games. Look great! Why sell that hard work?

If eldar, you might buy the new box with the banshees and the darkees. Models are cool, can be combined (though I never would_), and either side should fit on a 3x3.

For 3x3, play 500 pts. - my guess.

Nids would be most fun and easier to paint imho.

Hmm, I see:
Long out of print Forge World road sections.

Assorted GW plastic craters built into the table.

And the buildings themselves?
Most are from various GW Cities of Death terrain sets (couldn't tell you what sets exactly as they were all modular & Imperial and GWs put them out several times with different names/bundles/etc over the last 15 years or so). My guess is that they're from the original 4th ed release as that's when those road sections were new. Some of the building pieces could also be/probably are long out of print Forge World ruins as before the plastic ruins FW produced some beautiful (but stupid expensive) pieces.
You can get the plastic ruins on the GW site. 40k --> terrain --> City Ruins. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Warhammer-40-000?N=2562756967+2772332320&Nr=AND%28sku.siteId%3AUS_gw%2Cproduct.locale%3Aen_US_gw%29&Nrs=collection%28%29%2Frecord%5Bproduct.startDate+%3C%3D+1573043340000+and+product.endDate+%3E%3D+1573043340000%5D

My friend, there are no end of manufacturers of great terrain. Physical, or as 3d files. Just start Googling.

Wow the GW ruins are expensive. I might have to look on Ebay for some other option maybe(but we will see) I like those big Statues of the Emperor in that new KT zone. Wonder if heres anything like that around.

First off, amazing models after taking such a long hiatus. Have you been painting/modelling other things?

1. Those are GW's it looks like, you should be able to find lots of terrain on GW's website or ask at your local hobbyshop.

2. 500 pts at the most maybe just Kill Team (100-200 pts), I've done a lot of 500 pt intro games at 4x4, I think a 4x4 would serve you better if you want to play 40k, you can probably get away with 1500 pts on 4x4, but doing anything more than 500 on 3x3 is very cramped IMO.

3. Bad idea, Space Marines don't play nice with allies. Deathguard do better if you want a force with more than one faction.

4. I'd try playing both and see what you like the most and sell the other half on Ebay under buy-now at a fairly steep price, nobody picks it up at full price or above MSRP? You get to keep those sweet models, otherwise you can buy more Imperium units.

5. Get 2k built and painted for one faction first is my recommendation. I don't know what pts changes come with CA19 but the ground-Tyrant and Gargoyles are bad.

6. You need your codex and the rulebook. After you've played a game or two you'll need to read the FAQs for the main rulebook and your codex (these are free). You'll also need CA19 when it comes out.

7. Buy them separately or make some yourself with a printer and a laminater and some card sleeves to put them in. You can also just roll for them and write it down on a digital device or a piece of paper. Shuffling cards is a bother so for some missions it's easier to just roll.

Make your own! It's so much fun!

You can build virtually anything with corrugated cardboard, PVA glue and toilet paper (unused, obviously).

For the Emperor and Sanguinius!

Edit and thank you. I have painted some other stuff so its not 25 years of no painting. Really enjoyed painting 40k again though!!!

Great info, thanks.

1- Buildings, yep think im ok for those now, old GW stuff, scratch that and imo GW current ones are nice but too expensive.

2- Thanks, will upgrade my plan to small being 4x4 first with 500 then expand later.

3- Is it a bad idea due to making them poor at wining the game? Im not too fussed about being super efficient, just like to play friendly and my friend likes IG and Marines....thought it would be fun to do them and utilise my DI Marines. So can they be run together game wise?

6- Right....ill get the codex too I guess...hope they dont update the eldar one as soon as I get it.

It is an option in the game, it just means you get access to fewer rules that flavour and improve your Marines. If it was just a lower cost or less CP I wouldn't suggest you avoid it, but if you care about your Ultramarines being good at firing on the move and good at shooting with Assault and Rapid Fire weapons then I recommend you build purely SM armies.

Table is really easy, space tends to be the harder part for people.

What I did was I bought 1/2" plywood, lengths of 1/2" pine for supports, and folding legs off of Amazon. It's a little heavy but it's way easier to set up than my first table.

I have found 4'x4' work nicely with up to 750-1000 pts. Any particular reason for 3'x3'? Availability? Anyway wouldn't venture much further than 750 pts.

3- I will want to play Imperial vs another faction. For the Imperials can I use the Marines from DI and then add some Imperial Guard too to make a combined force?

You can but you lose marine super doctrine. Which might be good handicap to even things out...

Why not? Chaos is iconic opponent and thing about trading is it's always going to be in worse price than you paid. And eventually you might want to expand...And really what's wrong with chaos as opposite side?

6- For Tyranids or Eldar, do I need to buy the Codex for them really?(bare in mind smaller at home battles).

If marines have yes. Marines are atm 8.5 level vs 8.0 others have so they are on different level as is. Not using even codex and...well your marines would roflstomp everything with ease.

7- In the Bat rep above, they have objective cards. Do I need to buy these separately(they didnt come in the DI box)?

Depends on a) what kind of scenario you play b) how much convenience you appreciate. If you don't play maelstrom scenarios you can get by with just codex. If you do you still can get without but it's going to be very inconvenient. You will be rolling with two d6 dices your cards and you need to record what you rolled and check you haven't already rolled that before! Can get very time consuming. So in theory you don't need deck in maelstrom, in practice if the price is show stopper and you have to play maelstrom you are in the wrong hobby.

8- Would I be better getting into Apocalype instead? Heard its better or is it too expensive for one person buying 2 armies?

Well to make sense you need 2 armies that are like 3000+ size for 40k...so yeah very expensive proposition right away. Also you don't have to settle for one. Use 40k while armies grow, for big games you can later get apoc. It's not either or. You can get apoc rules later if you feel like.

btw nice models.

Though one option is to have IG as main force and smaller marine force to support.

(power gaming wise one nasty trick is small salamander detachment and use salamander character to make your core infantry, like lascannon teams or ad mech breachers, 100% immune to shooting from any distanceunless enemy sniper can kill that character or everything between character and enemy gets killed)

Thanks for more great info.

Settled on 4x4 to start.

Chaos....well, I like the Horus Risiing series etc, but I just think me and my friend if we play at my house will be more likely to play if its IG/Marines vs something more 'normal' like Eldar. I might keep the models...I love painting and always reluctant to sell but....if it helps increase other armies...I might do. In no rush on that front in truth.

IG/Marines...hmm thats an idea. What about buying a Cadian Def. force box and then using my Ultras from Dark Imperium as a support detachmet(or whatever they are called)

Apoc...hmm good points. Ill build 2 main forces then see if Apoc appeals still down the line.

Since you're doing Ultramarines, Nids would be a classic opponent for them (so aim for the Xmas box), and this is coming from someone who is an eldar player. There are so many options when it comes to paint schemes which should at least make it fun. I would sell the Deathguard to fund your next purchases (and then some).

Thanks again all.

Think im settled.

Found some ruins etc on ebay.

Will do IG + my painted Ultras

Buy Xmas Nids and also an Eldar force(now....can I find one of those big boxes from last year/beyond.....)

Will buy codex's

Will start with 4x4 and I will expand if and when im ready for larger.

Much obliged.
